Chapter 11: The Woman Who Knew My Mother
I stayed on the phone.
Nobody spoke.
Not even Vanessa.
The woman’s voice was calm, but there was urgency underneath it.
“Daniel, are you somewhere private?””
I looked around the basement.
“My family is here.””
A pause.
“Then they need to hear this too.””
I put the phone on speaker.
Emily stepped closer.
Ava held onto her sister’s arm.
Vanessa remained frozen.
“Rachel,” I said.
“Start from the beginning.””
The woman took a breath.
“Your mother contacted me six months before she passed away.””
“Why?””
“She was worried about financial documents connected to your family.””
I looked at the papers.
“She knew?””
“Yes.””
My eyes moved toward Vanessa.
“How much did she know?””
“She knew money was being moved.””
Vanessa whispered:
“I didn’t know she contacted anyone.””
Rachel heard her.
“You’re Vanessa?””
Vanessa didn’t answer.
Rachel continued.
“She told me she believed you were being pressured.””
That surprised me.
“What?””
“She didn’t think you were the person behind everything.””
Everyone looked at Vanessa.
Rachel continued.
“Your mother believed someone was manipulating you.””
I felt confused.
“Who?””
“That’s what she was trying to find out.””
I looked at the altered contract.
“So why did she hide this?””
“Because she was afraid.””
“Of what?””
The woman paused.
“Of accusing the wrong person.””
The answer bothered me.
Because it meant there was another layer.
Another person.
Another secret.
I looked at Vanessa.
“Who was pressuring you?””
She looked away.
I knew she didn’t want to answer.
But this time, I wasn’t asking as her husband.
I was asking as the father of the daughter whose future had been stolen.
“Vanessa.””
She finally spoke.
“Ryan.””
Emily closed her eyes.
“I knew it.””
Vanessa shook her head.
“It wasn’t like that.””
“How was it?””
“He knew about my old debt.””
“So?””
“He used it against me.””
I frowned.
“Explain.””
Vanessa sat down on the basement floor.
“When Marcus’s business started failing, Ryan told me he could help.””
“But why?””
“Because Ryan was already invested.””
I looked at the contract.
“The ten percent.””
She nodded.
“He needed the company to survive.””
Emily looked angry.
“So he convinced Mom to use my money.””
Vanessa shook her head.
“No.””
“Then what?””
“He convinced me that borrowing the money was temporary.””
I looked at her.
“And then?””
“Then he threatened me.””
Ava stepped closer.
“What did he threaten you with?””
Vanessa looked at her.
“With telling your father everything.””
The room became quiet.
“What everything?”” I asked.
Vanessa looked at me.
“My debt.””
I waited.
She looked away.
“My relationship with Marcus.””
My stomach tightened.
“What relationship?””
She swallowed.
“Before you and I met, Marcus and I dated.””
Emily gasped.
Ava looked shocked.
I just stood there.
Because that was another piece of my marriage I had never known.
“How long?””
“Almost two years.””
“And Ryan knew?””
“Yes.””
“Your brother knew about Marcus?””
“Yes.””
I rubbed my face.
Twenty-two years.
A lifetime.
And I was discovering pieces of it like a stranger reading someone else’s story.
Rachel interrupted.
“Daniel.””
I looked at the phone.
“Your mother knew about Marcus.””
That stopped me.
“What?””
“She found old records.””
“What records?””
“Payments between Marcus and Vanessa.””
Vanessa looked terrified.
“No.””
Rachel continued.
“She also found something else.””
“What?””
“A transfer made after your mother’s death.””
My heart dropped.
“What transfer?””
“A payment from an account connected to Marcus.””
I looked at Vanessa.
“What are you not telling me?””
She shook her head.
“I don’t know.””
But I could see the fear.
Rachel’s voice became serious.
“Daniel, you need to check the life insurance documents.””
I frowned.
“Why?””
“Because the person who received the final payment after your mother died…”
A pause.
Then:
“Was not you.””
I felt the room spin.
“My mother’s life insurance?””
“Yes.””
“That’s impossible.””
Rachel’s voice softened.
“I wish it was.””
I looked at Vanessa.
She looked like she was remembering something.
Something she had buried.
Then she whispered:
“I know that name.””
Everyone turned.
“What name?””
Vanessa looked at the phone.
“The person who received it.””
May you like
Her face went pale.
“Because they were at my wedding.””
