Chapter 5: The Man Behind the Transfers
I walked outside before answering.
I don’t know why.
Maybe because I didn’t want my daughters to hear whatever came next.
Maybe because part of me already knew my life was about to change.
The cold air hit my face.
Behind me, through the kitchen window, I could see Emily and Ava sitting together.
Two sisters.
Two daughters.
Both hurt.
I pressed the phone tighter.
“Who is this?””
The man hesitated.
“My name is Marcus Hale.””
My grip tightened.
The name I had just seen on the screen.
The name attached to my daughter’s stolen money.
“You’re the one who received the transfers.””
“Yes.””
“Then you better start explaining.””
His voice became quieter.
“I know how this looks.””
“It looks like you took ninety-two thousand dollars from my daughter.””
“I didn’t ask for that money.””
I froze.
“What?””
“I told Vanessa not to do it.””
I laughed bitterly.
“You expect me to believe that?””
“No. I expect you to check the records.””
I looked back toward the house.
“Why are you calling me?””
“Because Vanessa stopped answering my calls.””
My stomach tightened.
“What does that mean?””
“It means the situation is worse than you think.””
I stayed silent.
Marcus continued.
“She told you about the investment?””
“Yes.””
“She didn’t tell you about the loan.””
My heart dropped.
“What loan?””
A long pause.
Then:
“The loan secured against your house.””
I stopped breathing.
“What did you say?””
“Daniel, listen to me carefully. The money from Emily’s account was only part of it.””
My mind raced.
“What did she do?””
“She borrowed against the family property.””
I looked back at my house.
The place where we raised our daughters.
The place my father helped me buy.
The place my mother spent her final years visiting.
“How much?””
Marcus didn’t answer immediately.
“How much?””
“Two hundred thousand.””
I felt dizzy.
“That’s impossible.””
“I wish it was.””
I ended the call.
For several seconds, I stood there.
Unable to move.
Unable to think.
Then I walked back inside.
Vanessa looked at me.
She already knew.
“You called him.””
It wasn’t a question.
“You took a loan against our house.””
Emily gasped.
Ava covered her mouth.
Vanessa’s eyes filled with tears.
“Daniel…”
“How much?””
She whispered.
“Two hundred thousand.””
Emily stepped back.
“Mom…”
“I was going to fix it.””
“You keep saying that,” I said.
My voice was shaking.
“But you never explain how.””
Vanessa wiped her face.
“Marcus had an opportunity.””
“A scam?””
“No.””
“Then what?””
She looked at me.
“A real estate project.””
I stared at her.
“You barely know anything about investments.””
“I researched it.””
“You hid it.””
She looked down.
That was the truth.
The worst part wasn’t the money.
It was the secrecy.
She had made decisions that affected every person in this house without letting anyone else have a choice.
Emily picked up the laptop again.
“Dad.””
I turned.
“There’s another file.””
My heart sank.
“What file?””
She clicked it open.
A folder appeared.
Inside were documents.
Contracts.
Emails.
Messages.
And one name repeated over and over.
Marcus Hale.
But then Emily opened the newest document.
Her face changed.
“Dad…”
“What?””
She turned the screen toward me.
At the bottom of the page was a signature.
Not Vanessa’s.
Not mine.
Someone else’s.
A witness signature.
A person who had apparently been there when the loan was approved.
I looked closer.
Then I recognized the name.
A person I trusted.
Someone who had been inside this house many times.
Someone who had sat at our dinner table.
I looked at Vanessa.
“Why is your brother’s name on this?””
Her face went pale.
May you like
And for the first time...
she looked truly terrified.
