Chapter 12: The Guest Who Never Left

Nobody moved after Vanessa said those words.

“They were at my wedding.””

I stared at her.

“Who?””

She didn’t answer.

“Vanessa.””

She looked terrified.

“I need to see the documents.””

“No.””

Her eyes moved to me.

“No?””

“I need to see them first.””

That response made my chest tighten.

After everything.

After all the secrets.

She still wanted control.

“Why?””

“Because if I’m right…”

She stopped.

“If you’re right about what?””

Vanessa looked at the floor.

“I don’t want to say it.””

Emily stepped forward.

“Mom.””

Vanessa looked at her.

“You already hurt us by hiding things.””

Emily’s voice was calm.

“Don’t hurt us again by protecting someone else.””

Those words broke through.

Vanessa nodded slowly.

“The name was Greg Lawson.””

I frowned.

I knew that name.

Everyone in town knew that name.

Greg had been my mother’s financial advisor.

He helped her organize her accounts.

He attended my wedding.

He came to my house for holidays.

He was the man my family trusted.

“You’re saying Greg took my mother’s insurance money?””

Vanessa shook her head.

“I don’t know.””

“But you recognize the name.””

“Yes.””

I grabbed my phone.

I searched through old emails.

There it was.

A message from Greg.

Three years earlier.

A condolence message after my mother died.

I had never questioned it.

Why would I?

He was the person who helped handle everything.

The person who told me all paperwork was complete.

The person who said my mother’s accounts were secure.

My hands started shaking.

“How much was the insurance?””

Vanessa looked at me.

“Daniel…”

“How much?””

“Five hundred thousand.””

Emily gasped.

Ava covered her mouth.

I felt numb.

My mother’s money.

Emily’s college fund.

The house loan.

The investment.

All of it.

Different pieces.

Same pattern.

Someone had been moving money around our family for years.

Rachel spoke through the phone.

“Daniel, your mother suspected Greg.””

“Why didn’t she tell me?””

“Because she was trying to collect proof.””

“Did she?””

Rachel paused.

“Yes.””

I looked at the documents.

“What proof?””

“She recorded a conversation.””

My heart raced.

“Where is it?””

“I don’t know.””

“You called me because you know something.””

“I called because I found the location.””

“Where?””

Rachel hesitated.

Then said:

“Your mother hid it somewhere she knew only you would find.””

I looked around the basement.

The old boxes.

The documents.

The memories.

Then my eyes stopped on the metal box.

The one my mother’s note was inside.

“Wait.””

I opened the box again.

There was something underneath the papers.

A hidden compartment.

Emily noticed.

“Dad…”

I lifted the bottom panel.

Inside was a small envelope.

My name was written across it.

In my mother’s handwriting.

I opened it.

Inside was a single piece of paper.

Only one sentence.

*Daniel, if you found this, it means Vanessa finally told you the truth.*

I looked at my wife.

She started crying.

Because my mother’s next sentence was written below.

*But she is not the person you should be afraid of.*

I turned the page.

May you like

And the final line made my blood run cold.

*The person who destroyed this family is someone you have invited into your home for years.*
