Chapter 8: The Deal That Destroyed Everything

I printed the document at the kitchen table.

The sound of the printer filling the silence felt almost unreal.

A normal family moment.

Except nothing about our family felt normal anymore.

Emily stood beside me.

Ava sat quietly across the room.

And Vanessa watched every page come out.

She looked like someone waiting for a verdict.

I placed the document on the table.

“Read it.””

Vanessa didn’t move.

“Daniel…”

“Read it.””

Slowly, she picked it up.

Her eyes moved across the page.

Then she stopped.

“You shouldn’t have this.””

The words shocked me.

Not because she admitted it.

Because she sounded more worried about the document than what it revealed.

“That’s your response?””

She looked up.

“You don’t understand.””

“No.””

I shook my head.

“I don’t.””

I tapped the page.

“So explain.””

The contract showed a company called Hale Development Group.

Marcus’s company.

But below that was another section.

A private agreement.

A profit-sharing agreement.

And one of the names listed was Ryan Carter.

Vanessa’s brother.

Emily read it.

“Uncle Ryan gets ten percent?””

Vanessa nodded.

“Yes.””

“Of what?””

“Of the profits.””

Emily looked at me.

“So Uncle Ryan helped take my money because he wanted a cut?””

Vanessa immediately said:

“No.””

Then she stopped.

Because she didn’t have another explanation.

I looked at Vanessa.

“Did Ryan convince you to do this?””

She sat down.

“He told me it was a guaranteed opportunity.””

“Nothing is guaranteed.””

“I know that now.””

“No.””

I shook my head.

“You knew before.””

She looked at me.

That hurt because she didn’t deny it.

I walked to the window.

Outside, the Mustang sat in the driveway.

The giant red bow was still attached.

A symbol of the lie we had celebrated that morning.

Ava followed my eyes.

“I’m sorry.””

I turned.

“For what?””

She looked at the car.

“For being happy about it.””

My heart broke.

Because my daughter was carrying guilt that belonged to adults.

I walked over and hugged her.

“None of this is your fault.””

“But Emily lost her money because of me.””

“No.””

I looked directly at her.

“Your mother made those choices.””

Ava nodded, but the sadness remained.

Emily closed the contract.

“There’s something else.””

We looked at her.

She pointed at the bottom.

“The date.””

I stepped closer.

The date was from eight months earlier.

Before the Mustang.

Before the first withdrawal.

Before any of us knew anything was wrong.

“What about it?””

Emily looked at Vanessa.

“Mom already knew this investment was happening before she touched my account.””

Vanessa’s face changed.

“No.””

Emily turned the paper around.

“The agreement was signed eight months ago.””

She pointed.

“But the first transfer from my account happened six months ago.””

I understood.

The plan existed before the money disappeared.

Vanessa had already decided.

She just waited until she needed more money.

“Is that true?””

Vanessa looked at me.

“I didn’t know it would get this bad.””

“But you knew enough.””

She started crying.

“I thought I could fix it.””

I looked away.

That sentence had become meaningless.

My phone rang.

I saw the name.

Ryan.

Everyone saw it.

Nobody spoke.

I answered.

“What do you want?””

Ryan was quiet.

Then:

“Daniel, I know you’re angry.””

“You think?””

“I need you to listen.””

“I’m done listening to excuses.””

His voice lowered.

“This isn’t about the money anymore.””

I frowned.

“What does that mean?””

“Marcus didn’t tell you everything.””

I looked at Vanessa.

“What are you talking about?””

Ryan continued.

“The investment wasn’t supposed to fail.””

“Then why did it?””

A pause.

Then he said:

“Because someone changed the documents.””

My grip tightened.

“Who?””

Another pause.

And then Ryan whispered:

“Vanessa.””

The room went completely silent.

I looked at my wife.

She looked terrified.

Not angry.

Not offended.

Terrified.

“Ryan is lying.””

Maybe she was telling the truth.

Maybe she wasn’t.

But before I could ask another question, Ryan said something else.

Something that changed everything.

“Daniel, check the original contract.””

“Why?””

“Because the person who changed it didn’t just steal Emily’s money.””

I waited.

May you like

Ryan’s voice became almost a whisper.

“They set you up to take the blame.””
