Chapter 7: The Person I Trusted Most
The name on the screen made my hands go cold.
I stared at it.
Then I looked at Emily.
Then Ava.
Neither of them knew what I was seeing yet.
Neither of them knew that the last piece of this nightmare had just fallen into place.
The final transfer from Emily’s college account had not gone to Marcus Hale.
It had not gone to Ryan.
It had gone to someone whose name I knew better than anyone.
Vanessa Carter.
My wife.
Again.
But this time, the transaction wasn’t hidden behind a company.
It wasn’t disguised as an investment.
It was a direct transfer.
$15,000.
Sent from Emily’s account.
Sent to Vanessa’s personal account.
I looked at my wife.
“Why?””
Her face drained of color.
“I can explain.””
Those four words.
I hated those four words.
Because every time someone said them, it meant the truth was worse.
“Explain what?””
Vanessa stepped forward.
“Daniel, please.””
“No.””
My voice was calm.
Too calm.
“Tell me why you moved another fifteen thousand dollars into your own account.””
Emily covered her mouth.
Ava looked at her mother.
“Mom?””
Vanessa looked around the room.
Like she was searching for someone to defend her.
Nobody did.
Finally, she whispered:
“I needed it.””
Emily’s eyes filled with disbelief.
“You needed my money?””
“I was going to put it back.””
“You keep saying that.””
Emily’s voice cracked.
“But you never do.””
Vanessa looked hurt.
“I was under pressure.””
I laughed quietly.
“Under pressure?””
I pointed at the laptop.
“You had months to tell us.””
“I was scared.””
“Of what?””
She looked at me.
“Of losing you.””
The answer should have meant something.
It should have softened me.
But standing there, looking at my daughter’s empty college account, it only made me angrier.
“You weren’t afraid of losing me.””
I shook my head.
“You were afraid of losing control.””
Vanessa looked away.
And that was when I knew.
There was still something she wasn’t saying.
I picked up my phone.
“I’m calling the bank again.””
Vanessa stepped forward.
“Daniel, wait.””
“No.””
“Please listen.””
I stopped.
Not because I wanted to.
Because something in her voice sounded different.
Broken.
Not defensive.
Broken.
“I didn’t take that money for myself.””
I looked at the screen.
“Then where did it go?””
She swallowed.
“I paid someone.””
“Who?””
She hesitated.
Then said:
“Ryan.””
Emily frowned.
“Uncle Ryan?””
Vanessa nodded.
“He was the one who connected me to Marcus.””
The room went silent.
I felt like I had been hit.
Ryan wasn’t just a witness.
He wasn’t just helping.
He was involved from the beginning.
“Why would Ryan need money?””
Vanessa shook her head.
“He didn’t.””
“Then why did you send him fifteen thousand dollars?””
She looked at the floor.
“Because he threatened to tell you.””
Emily froze.
“Tell Dad what?””
Vanessa didn’t answer.
I stepped closer.
“Tell me what?””
Her eyes filled with tears.
“About my past.””
The words hung there.
Ava looked confused.
Emily looked angry.
And I felt something I hadn’t felt in years.
Fear.
Not because of money.
Because I suddenly realized my marriage might have been built on things I never knew.
“What past?””
Vanessa wiped her eyes.
“Before I met you…”
She stopped.
I waited.
“Before I met you, I made mistakes.””
“What kind of mistakes?””
She looked at the floor.
“Financial ones.””
I stared at her.
“That’s not enough.””
She nodded slowly.
“I had debt.””
“How much?””
“Almost fifty thousand.””
I frowned.
“Then why didn’t you tell me?””
“Because I paid it off.””
“With what?””
Silence.
I already knew.
But I needed her to say it.
“With Marcus’s help.””
Emily whispered:
“Oh my God.””
Vanessa looked at her.
“I was trying to leave that life behind.””
I shook my head.
“You didn’t leave it behind.””
I pointed at the laptop.
“You brought it into our house.””
My phone buzzed.
Another message.
This time from Marcus.
I opened it.
There was a photo attached.
A document.
A contract.
And underneath it, a message.
*Ask Vanessa why Ryan has been collecting money from this deal for months.*
I looked at the photo.
My eyes moved across the page.
Then stopped.
Because the contract wasn’t just connected to Emily’s college money.
It was connected to something much bigger.
The name of the project.
The company.
The investors.
And one signature at the bottom.
A signature that proved Vanessa had lied about one thing.
May you like
She wasn’t just trying to save Marcus.
She was trying to save herself.
