Chapter 8: The Truth Victoria Buried

Julian didn’t open the door.

For several seconds, nobody breathed.

Victoria stood outside.

Waiting.

Knowing.

Always knowing.

Finally, Julian spoke.

“Why are you here?””

Her answer came immediately.

“Because I need to talk to my son.””

Richard looked at Julian.

“Don’t let her separate you.””

Julian looked through the glass window in the door.

“I want answers.””

Richard nodded.

“Then get them.””

Julian opened the door.

Victoria stood there in her wedding dress.

Not literally.

She had changed before arriving.

But somehow, she still looked like she belonged in the ballroom.

Perfect.

Controlled.

Untouched.

Until she saw Richard.

Her entire face changed.

For the first time, Victoria Whitmore looked afraid.

“You.””

Richard stared at her.

“Yes.””

She stepped back.

“You’re supposed to be dead.””

Richard’s voice was calm.

“You made sure everyone believed that.””

Julian looked between them.

“What did you do?””

Victoria recovered.

“Julian, you don’t understand.””

“No.””

His voice was colder now.

“I understand that you locked my pregnant wife in a bathroom.””

Her eyes moved to me.

Then back to him.

“I was protecting this family.””

“You keep saying that.””

“Because it’s true.””

Richard laughed quietly.

“Victoria, even now?””

She ignored him.

“Julian, listen to me. She manipulated you.””

I stared at her.

“Me?””

“Yes.””

She pointed at the file.

“She knew exactly what she was doing.””

Julian looked at the papers.

“Mom.””

“No. You don’t know the whole story.””

Richard stepped forward.

“Then tell him.””

Victoria’s expression hardened.

“You disappeared because you were weak.””

Richard’s face changed.

“I disappeared because you threatened Claire’s mother.””

Silence.

Julian looked at his mother.

“What?””

Victoria’s eyes narrowed.

“That’s a lie.””

Richard shook his head.

“You told her you would destroy her if she exposed the trust.””

I felt dizzy.

“My mother?””

Richard nodded.

“She was terrified.””

Victoria looked at me.

“You believe him?””

I didn’t answer.

Because a part of me wanted to.

But another part was still struggling.

Families were complicated.

People lied.

People protected themselves.

How could I know who was telling the truth?

Then Julian spoke.

“Mom.””

Victoria looked at him.

“Why did you investigate Claire?””

She didn’t answer.

“Why?””

Her silence was the answer.

Julian’s face fell.

“You did.””

Victoria finally said:

“Because I knew something was wrong.””

“With what?””

“With her.””

I stared.

“What did I do?””

Victoria looked at me.

“You existed.””

The words were quiet.

But they hurt.

She continued.

“Your father always had a weakness for people who needed saving.””

Richard shook his head.

“That’s not true.””

“It is.””

Victoria’s voice rose.

“He gave away money. He trusted strangers. He thought kindness made him noble.””

She looked at Julian.

“And then he almost destroyed everything because of one girl.””

I frowned.

“What are you talking about?””

Victoria smiled sadly.

“Ask Richard.””

Everyone looked at him.

Richard didn’t speak.

That scared me.

Because whatever it was…

It was bigger than money.

Julian noticed too.

“Dad.””

Richard closed his eyes.

“When Claire was born…”

I froze.

“When Claire was born?””

Richard looked at me.

“I was there.””

The room went silent.

My heart started racing.

“What?””

Richard swallowed.

“Your mother asked me to witness the birth because she had no one else.””

Julian stared.

“Dad…”

Richard looked at me.

“I held you before your own father did.””

My hands went cold.

Victoria whispered:

“And that is the truth she never knew.””

I looked at Richard.

“What are you saying?””

He reached into the file.

Pulled out one final document.

Then placed it in my hands.

The paper was old.

Yellowed.

At the top were words that made my breath stop.

*Paternity Test Results.*

My fingers trembled.

Richard said softly:

“Claire, Michael Bennett was the man who raised you.””

A pause.

“But he was not your biological father.””

I looked down.

The name on the report blurred.

Until I saw it.

The answer.

The name I had spent my whole life not knowing.

May you like

And it was impossible.

Because it belonged to someone standing in that room.
