Chapter 2: The Secret Behind the Smile
The recording ended.
For several seconds, neither Emily nor I spoke.
The only sound was the distant wedding music vibrating through the walls.
A song about love.
A room built for celebration.
And inside a locked bathroom, my husband’s mother was admitting she had planned something against me.
Emily crouched beside me.
“Claire, are you okay?””
I laughed once.
Not because it was funny.
Because I didn’t know what else to do.
“My water broke at a wedding, and my mother-in-law locked me away like a problem she could hide.””
Emily looked toward the door.
“She’s done this before.””
I stared at her.
“What?””
Emily hesitated.
Then she sat down beside me.
“I wasn’t supposed to tell you.””
“Tell me what?””
She looked at the phone.
“When Seraphina hired me, Victoria told me there were certain people who couldn’t be allowed to ‘take over the evening.’”
My face tightened.
“She meant me.””
Emily nodded.
“I thought she was just talking about jealous relatives. I didn’t understand.””
A sharp pain crossed my stomach.
I gripped the edge of the sink.
Emily immediately stood.
“We need to get you out.””
“Yes.””
She tried the door.
Locked.
She knocked hard.
“Victoria!””
Nothing.
“Open this door!””
Still nothing.
Emily’s face changed.
“She’s really leaving us here.””
I looked at the small bathroom window.
Too high.
Too small.
My baby didn’t care about family drama.
My baby needed help.
I pulled myself up.
“Call someone.””
Emily looked embarrassed.
“I don’t have reception in here.””
“What?””
“The bridal suite blocks the signal.””
Of course.
Everything about this night was designed perfectly.
Even the place where I was trapped.
Then my phone buzzed.
I froze.
Emily looked at me.
“Your phone?””
I shook my head.
“My phone is in my purse.””
The buzzing came again.
But it wasn’t from my phone.
It was from Emily’s.
She looked down.
A text message appeared.
From Victoria.
*Stay where you are. Do not interfere.*
Emily’s face went white.
“She knows I’m here.””
I stared at the message.
“She knew?””
Emily nodded slowly.
“She must have seen me enter the bathroom.””
The realization hit harder than the contraction.
Victoria wasn’t trying to avoid a scene.
She was controlling one.
A few minutes later, we heard voices outside.
Julian.
“Mom, where is Claire?””
My entire body moved toward the door.
“Julian!””
Emily grabbed my shoulder.
“Wait.””
“Why?””
She pointed at the phone.
The recording was still open.
We could hear Victoria.
“She needed space.””
Julian’s voice became sharper.
“My wife is nine months pregnant. She doesn’t need space.””
“She’s emotional.””
“No. She’s scared.””
I closed my eyes.
That was my husband.
The man who held my hand at every appointment.
The man who painted the nursery himself.
The man who promised me nobody would ever come between us.
Then Victoria spoke.
“Julian, you need to think carefully.””
“About what?””
“About what kind of woman you want raising your child.””
Silence.
My heart sank.
Emily looked at me.
“She’s turning him against you.””
I pressed my hand against my stomach.
The baby moved.
A tiny reminder that I couldn’t fall apart.
Not now.
Outside, Julian spoke again.
“Where is Claire?””
Victoria didn’t answer immediately.
When she did, her voice was softer.
“She was upset earlier. She said things.””
“What things?””
“She said she regretted marrying into this family.””
My mouth opened.
A lie.
A complete lie.
I grabbed the door.
“Julian, that’s not true!””
But the music suddenly exploded outside.
Another song.
Another distraction.
Then I heard Julian’s footsteps moving away.
“Wait!”” I screamed.
No answer.
Emily looked horrified.
“She’s making sure he doesn’t hear you.””
I leaned against the wall, fighting tears.
Then Emily suddenly looked at the recording again.
“Claire.””
“What?””
She replayed the beginning.
The part before Victoria locked me inside.
A different voice appeared.
Seraphina’s.
My sister-in-law.
Quiet.
Almost nervous.
“Mom, are you sure this is necessary?””
I stopped breathing.
Emily looked at me.
“Claire…”
The recording continued.
Victoria replied:
“Your wedding is the first time this family has looked perfect in years. I will not let Claire destroy that.””
Then Seraphina whispered:
“But what if Julian finds out?””
Victoria answered immediately.
“He won’t.””
A pause.
Then Victoria said something that made my blood turn cold.
“Because after tonight, Julian will finally know the truth about who Claire really is.””
The bathroom door suddenly unlocked.
Emily and I both turned.
Someone was standing outside.
But it wasn’t Victoria.
It was Seraphina.
Her wedding dress was covered in tiny crystals.
Her face was pale.
And she was holding a folder.
May you like
“Claire,” she whispered.
“I need to tell you why my mother is so afraid of you.””
