Chapter 6: The Dead Man’s Warning

The hospital lights were too bright.

That was the first thing I noticed.

After hours of golden chandeliers and expensive decorations, the plain white hallway felt almost unreal.

Like I had stepped into another life.

Julian sat beside me while nurses checked the baby.

He hadn’t let go of my hand.

Not once.

But he also hadn’t asked me any more questions.

And somehow, that silence hurt.

Finally, I whispered:

“Are you angry?””

He looked at me.

“I don’t know what I am.””

I nodded.

“That’s fair.””

He looked down.

“I spent tonight hearing secrets about my family from everyone except the person I trusted most.””

My throat tightened.

“I wasn’t trying to deceive you.””

“I know.””

“You do?””

He sighed.

“Yes.””

That surprised me.

“Why?””

“Because I know you.””

His eyes filled with exhaustion.

“But I’m still trying to understand why you thought you had to carry everything alone.””

I looked away.

Because I didn’t have a good answer.

Before I could respond, the doctor entered.

“Claire Bennett?””

I sat up.

“Yes?””

“Your baby is stable.””

Relief flooded through me.

Julian closed his eyes.

A quiet breath escaped him.

“Thank God.””

The doctor smiled.

“But we need to monitor you closely. Your stress levels have been high.””

I almost laughed.

“That makes sense.””

After the doctor left, Julian’s phone rang.

He looked at the screen.

Unknown number.

He hesitated.

Then answered.

“Hello?””

At first, nobody spoke.

Then a voice came through.

A voice Julian recognized.

His entire body went still.

“Dad?””

I stared at him.

Impossible.

Richard Whitmore had been dead for five years.

Julian stood slowly.

“Who is this?””

The voice answered:

“Julian, listen carefully.””

My heart started racing.

Because I knew that voice.

Not because I had heard it recently.

Because I had heard it years ago.

In old memories.

“Dad?””

The voice continued.

“Your mother is lying to you.””

Julian looked at me.

The blood drained from his face.

“How are you calling me?””

A pause.

Then:

“I never died.””

The room went silent.

I felt cold.

Julian gripped the phone.

“What?””

The voice lowered.

“I had to disappear.””

“Why?””

Another pause.

“Because Victoria found out about Claire.””

My entire body froze.

The baby monitor beeped softly beside me.

Julian whispered:

“What does Claire have to do with this?””

The answer came immediately.

“Everything.””

I grabbed Julian’s arm.

“Put him on speaker.””

He did.

Richard Whitmore’s voice filled the room.

“Claire, I’m sorry.””

I couldn’t speak.

“Sorry for what?””

“For letting Victoria hurt you.””

Julian looked at me.

His confusion was turning into anger.

“What is happening?””

Richard continued.

“Claire, your mother asked me to protect you.””

My eyes widened.

“My mother?””

“Yes.””

The room seemed to tilt.

“She knew something about Daniel Cross.””

The same name.

Again.

But this time, it sounded different.

Not like a weapon.

Like a warning.

Richard said:

“Daniel Cross wasn’t your father.””

I closed my eyes.

Relief almost came.

Until he finished.

“He was your grandfather.””

I stopped breathing.

Julian looked at me.

And then Richard said the sentence that changed everything:

“Your real father is someone you have known your entire life.””

A knock sounded at the hospital room door.

Everyone turned.

A nurse opened it.

A man stood outside.

Older.

Tired.

Terrified.

Holding a file.

Richard Whitmore.

Alive.

And the first thing he said was:

“Claire, before Victoria finds me, you need to know who your father really is.””
