Chapter 5: The Name I Never Knew

I had spent my entire life believing I knew where I came from.

My mother.

My childhood.

The small apartment where I grew up.

The man who taught me how to ride a bicycle.

The man who called me his daughter until the day he died.

Now Victoria Whitmore was standing in front of me, holding a piece of paper that threatened to destroy everything.

“That’s impossible,” I whispered.

Victoria tilted her head.

“Is it?””

Julian looked at his mother.

“Mom, stop.””

“No.””

His voice became sharper.

“I mean it. Stop.””

But Victoria didn’t listen.

She handed him the document.

“I wanted you to know before you built a life with her.””

Julian didn’t take it.

“Then tell me what it says.””

Victoria looked directly at me.

“Your wife’s biological father was Daniel Cross.””

The name hit me like a physical blow.

I stepped back.

“No.””

I knew that name.

Everyone did.

Daniel Cross.

A businessman who had died in a plane crash fifteen years earlier.

A man whose company had been sold for billions.

A man whose face had appeared in newspapers.

But he wasn’t my father.

He couldn’t be.

“My father was Michael Bennett.””

Victoria shrugged.

“Your mother changed your last name.””

I stared at her.

“You’re lying.””

“Am I?””

She looked at Julian.

“Ask her about the necklace.””

My hand immediately went to my chest.

The necklace.

The only thing I had from my mother.

A small silver pendant she gave me before she died.

Julian noticed.

“You have it?””

I looked at him.

“I always wear it.””

Victoria smiled.

“Because Daniel Cross gave it to your mother.””

The room spun.

“No.””

Seraphina stepped forward.

“Mom, enough.””

Victoria ignored her.

“Your mother worked for Daniel Cross before she disappeared.””

“She didn’t disappear.””

My voice shook.

“She died.””

“Yes.””

Victoria’s eyes narrowed.

“But before she did, she left something behind.””

Julian looked at me.

“Claire…”

I could barely hear him.

Because memories were rushing back.

My mother sitting at the kitchen table.

Her fingers touching that necklace.

Her telling me:

“Some things are safer when they stay hidden.””

I had always thought she meant our financial struggles.

I had never imagined this.

A wedding guest walked past the hallway entrance, laughing.

A reminder that the world outside continued normally.

While mine was breaking apart.

Julian finally took the document.

He read it.

His face changed.

“Mom…”

“What?””

He looked up.

“This is not proof.””

Victoria frowned.

“What?””

“This is a report.””

“Yes.””

“An investigation report.””

“Yes.””

“Not a DNA test.””

Her expression flickered.

Just for a second.

But I saw it.

Fear.

Julian saw it too.

“You don’t know this is true.””

Victoria recovered quickly.

“I know enough.””

“No.””

Julian shook his head.

“You wanted me to believe this without checking.””

“I wanted to protect you.””

“You wanted to control the situation.””

The words landed.

Victoria stared at her son.

“You’re choosing her?””

Julian looked at me.

Then at his mother.

“I’m choosing the truth.””

For the first time that night, Victoria looked uncertain.

Then her phone rang.

She glanced at the screen.

And the color drained from her face.

“Who is it?”” Seraphina asked.

Victoria didn’t answer.

She answered the call.

“Hello?””

A man’s voice came through the speaker.

I couldn’t hear everything.

Only fragments.

“…the original file…”

“…you said nobody would find out…”

Victoria’s eyes widened.

She quickly stepped away.

But it was too late.

Julian had heard enough.

He walked toward her.

“Who are you talking to?””

Victoria ended the call.

“No one.””

Julian laughed bitterly.

“Another lie?””

A nurse suddenly appeared at the end of the hallway.

“Excuse me. Is Claire Bennett here?””

Everyone turned.

The nurse looked at me.

“We received a call from someone inside the venue.””

She held up a wheelchair.

“You need to come with us now.””

Julian immediately moved beside me.

But before we left, the nurse added:

“There’s one more thing.””

She looked at Victoria.

“The person who called the hospital said not to trust anyone in this family.””

My stomach tightened.

“Who called?””

The nurse checked her notes.

Then looked at me.

“It was a man named Richard Whitmore.””

Julian froze.

“My father?””

The nurse nodded.

“But that’s impossible.””

May you like

She looked confused.

“Because the call was made thirty minutes ago.””
