Chapter 10: The Lie That Started Everything

The hallway went silent.

Not quiet.

Silent.

The kind of silence that comes right before something breaks.

I stared at Richard.

The man who had walked into my hospital room claiming he protected me.

The man who said he held me when I was born.

The man who said he cared about my mother.

And now Victoria had just accused him of causing my father’s death.

“Is that true?””

My voice sounded unfamiliar.

Richard looked at me.

Pain crossed his face.

“Claire…”

“Is it true?””

Julian stepped closer to me.

“Dad.””

Richard closed his eyes.

For a few seconds, he said nothing.

And that was enough.

My chest tightened.

“You lied.””

“No.””

“You let me believe you were the person who saved my family.””

“I did save your family.””

“Then why is Victoria saying my father died because of you?””

Richard looked exhausted.

“Because there is a piece of the story she doesn’t know.””

Victoria laughed.

“Of course.””

She stepped forward.

“Richard always has a piece nobody knows.””

Julian looked at his mother.

“Mom, you knew about this?””

Victoria’s expression changed.

“I knew enough.””

“That’s not an answer.””

She looked at her son.

“Your father made mistakes.””

Richard’s jaw tightened.

“So did you.””

“And yours killed someone.””

The words hit the hallway.

A nurse looked uncomfortable.

“We need to move Claire to delivery.””

Nobody listened.

Not anymore.

I couldn’t move.

Not with this hanging over me.

“Richard.””

He looked at me.

“Tell me.””

He nodded slowly.

“I will.””

Victoria crossed her arms.

“Finally.””

Richard looked at me.

“Your father, Michael, discovered that Daniel Cross’s company had been hiding illegal financial activity.””

I frowned.

“My grandfather?””

“Yes.””

“But Michael was his son.””

“Exactly.””

Richard continued.

“Michael wanted to expose everything.””

Victoria interrupted.

“And destroy thousands of people’s lives.””

Richard turned toward her.

“He wanted justice.””

“He wanted revenge.””

I looked between them.

“Why?””

Richard sighed.

“Because Daniel Cross abandoned him.””

The hallway blurred.

“So my father found out his biological family was corrupt.””

Richard nodded.

“And he wanted the truth exposed.””

“Then what happened?””

Richard looked down.

“Michael came to me.””

I froze.

“You?””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

“Because I was one of the few people who could help him.””

Victoria laughed bitterly.

“And what did you do?””

Richard’s face changed.

“I tried.””

The answer sounded weak.

Too weak.

“What does that mean?””

Richard looked at me.

“It means I failed.””

A painful silence followed.

Julian stared at his father.

“What happened?””

Richard swallowed.

“The night Michael was supposed to release the documents, he disappeared.””

My stomach twisted.

“Disappeared?””

Richard nodded.

“Three days later, his car was found.””

I felt cold.

“Everyone thought it was an accident.””

Richard looked away.

“But it wasn’t.””

My heart stopped.

“What?””

Victoria spoke.

“Now ask him why.””

Julian looked at his father.

“Dad?””

Richard’s voice was barely audible.

“Because I gave Michael the wrong information.””

Nobody moved.

I stared.

“What information?””

Richard looked at me.

“I told him someone he trusted was helping him.””

“Who?””

Richard hesitated.

Then he said:

“Daniel Cross’s lawyer.””

Victoria smiled.

“And that lawyer worked for someone else.””

I whispered:

“Who?””

Victoria looked directly at Richard.

“You know who.””

Richard said nothing.

Julian’s face changed.

“Mom.””

Victoria looked away.

“I didn’t know what he would do.””

Richard turned sharply.

“What?””

“You heard me.””

“You hired him.””

“I hired someone to stop Michael from destroying your family.””

Richard looked horrified.

“You didn’t tell me.””

“No.””

“Because you knew I would stop you.””

Victoria’s silence confirmed it.

The truth landed piece by piece.

Not one villain.

Not one victim.

Just years of secrets.

Years of people making choices.

And everyone pretending they were protecting someone.

A nurse finally stepped forward.

“Claire, we really need to go.””

I nodded weakly.

As they started moving my bed, Julian walked beside me.

He looked shattered.

“Claire.””

I looked at him.

“I’m sorry.””

“For what?””

“For every time I believed my family before I believed you.””

My eyes filled.

But before I could answer, Richard called out.

“Claire.””

I turned.

He held another envelope.

“There’s one thing Michael left behind.””

“What?””

Richard looked at Victoria.

Then at me.

“Proof of who was responsible.””

Victoria’s face changed.

A real reaction.

Fear.

Richard held the envelope tighter.

“And it isn’t just about Michael’s death.””

The delivery room doors opened.

The nurse pushed me inside.

May you like

But the last thing I heard before they closed was Victoria saying:

“Richard, if you give her that, you destroy all of us.””
