Chapter 3: The Folder on the Floor

Seraphina stood in the doorway like she had aged ten years in the last five minutes.

The woman who had been smiling under chandeliers and cameras was gone.

Now she looked terrified.

I stared at her.

“You knew?””

Her eyes filled with tears.

“No.””

I pointed toward the phone in Emily’s hand.

“You knew your mother locked me in here?””

“No.””

“Then why did you come?””

Seraphina looked down at the folder she was holding.

“Because I found this.””

Another contraction came.

I grabbed the sink.

Seraphina immediately stepped forward.

“Oh my God. Claire.””

Emily moved beside me.

“We need a hospital.””

Seraphina nodded.

“I know.””

She looked toward the hallway.

“My mother sent security to keep people away from this area.””

I couldn’t believe it.

“Security?””

Seraphina closed her eyes.

“She told them there was a family emergency.””

Emily whispered:

“She planned everything.””

Seraphina didn’t argue.

Instead, she opened the folder.

Inside were printed documents.

Emails.

Photos.

A copy of a letter.

She handed the papers to me.

The first page made no sense.

My name was at the top.

*Claire Bennett.*

Below it were private details about my life.

My old apartment.

My previous job.

My family.

I looked at Seraphina.

“Why does your mother have this?””

“She hired someone to investigate you.””

My chest tightened.

“Why?””

Seraphina looked away.

“Because she never trusted you.””

I laughed bitterly.

“I’ve been married to Julian for three years.””

“I know.””

“She invited me to family dinners.””

“I know.””

“She acted like she accepted me.””

Seraphina swallowed.

“She didn’t.””

I looked back at the papers.

There was one sentence highlighted.

*Potential financial motivation through marriage.*

My hands started shaking.

“She thinks I married Julian for money?””

Seraphina’s eyes filled with shame.

“Yes.””

Emily shook her head.

“That’s insane.””

Seraphina whispered:

“I tried to stop her.””

I looked up.

“When?””

“Last month.””

“And?””

“She told me if I defended you, she would cancel the wedding.””

I stared at her.

“You let her do this?””

The words came out harsher than I intended.

Seraphina flinched.

“I was scared.””

The honesty in her voice stopped me.

For the first time all night, I saw something other than arrogance in a Whitmore family member.

I saw fear.

A loud crash echoed from the hallway.

Everyone froze.

Then Julian’s voice.

“Claire?””

My heart jumped.

“Julian!””

This time he heard me.

Footsteps rushed toward us.

“Claire!””

The door opened fully.

Julian appeared, his face filled with panic.

The second he saw me, he ran forward.

“I’m so sorry.””

I wanted to fall into his arms.

I wanted to believe everything would be okay.

But then I saw Victoria behind him.

Standing silently.

Watching.

Julian looked at his mother.

“What did you do?””

For the first time, Victoria looked nervous.

“Julian, don’t make a scene.””

He laughed in disbelief.

“A scene?””

He pointed at me.

“My pregnant wife was locked in a bathroom.””

Victoria’s expression hardened.

“She was overwhelmed.””

“No.””

Julian stepped closer.

“She was trapped.””

The hallway went silent.

Then Victoria looked directly at me.

And smiled.

Not a kind smile.

A warning.

“You really want to do this now?””

I held her gaze.

“Yes.””

She tilted her head.

“Then you should know something.””

Julian moved between us.

“Mom, stop.””

But Victoria ignored him.

She looked at me.

“The reason I investigated you wasn’t because I hated you.””

My stomach tightened.

“Then why?””

She reached into her purse.

And pulled out a small envelope.

“I found something about your past that even your husband doesn’t know.””

Julian looked confused.

“What are you talking about?””

Victoria handed him the envelope.

“Ask your wife who she really was before she met you.””

Julian opened it.

His face changed.

Slowly.

Confusion.

Then shock.

He looked at me.

May you like

And whispered:

“Claire… why is there a picture of you with my father?””
