Chapter 13: The Child My Mother Hid

The recording ended.

Nobody spoke.

The silence afterward felt heavier than the sound itself.

I stared at the device in Richard’s hand.

My father’s voice.

The man who packed my lunches.

The man who taught me to swim.

The man who stayed awake when I had nightmares.

The man who told me every night that I was his greatest gift.

And yet, somehow, he had been part of a secret that followed me my entire life.

Julian sat down slowly.

“I don’t understand.””

Neither did I.

Richard looked at the floor.

“Michael was trying to protect Claire.””

Victoria immediately shook her head.

“No.””

Richard turned toward her.

“Yes.””

“You don’t get to rewrite history.””

“I’m not.””

Victoria’s face twisted.

“You abandoned us.””

Richard flinched.

“You betrayed Michael.””

“And you let him die.””

The words hit the room.

I looked between them.

“Enough.””

Both of them stopped.

I had spent my whole life being the person everyone protected.

The person nobody told anything.

The person who was expected to smile while others decided what was best for me.

Not anymore.

“I want the truth.””

My voice was quiet.

But everyone heard it.

“I want all of it.””

Richard nodded.

“I owe you that.””

He sat beside the window.

“Your mother’s name was Elena.””

I closed my eyes.

My mother.

Even hearing her name felt strange.

Like opening a door that had been locked for decades.

“After Daniel Cross abandoned Michael, your father grew up believing he was worthless. He changed his name. He built a simple life.””

“That was why he became Michael Bennett.””

Richard nodded.

“Yes.””

Julian looked at the baby in my arms.

“And Claire was the only thing that mattered to him.””

Richard smiled sadly.

“Yes.””

I looked down.

“Then why hide everything?””

Richard took a deep breath.

“Because Elena discovered Daniel Cross had another secret.””

“What secret?””

“Daniel had another child.””

I froze.

“We know that.””

“No.””

Richard looked at me.

“You know about Michael.””

My heart stopped.

“What?””

Richard continued.

“Daniel Cross had one more child after Michael.””

Julian frowned.

“Another sibling?””

Richard nodded.

“Your mother knew about him.””

I felt a chill.

“My mother?””

“Yes.””

“Who was he?””

Richard hesitated.

Then he looked at Victoria.

Victoria’s expression changed.

Not fear.

Recognition.

“No.””

Richard continued.

“His name was Adrian Cross.””

The room went still.

I searched my memories.

The name meant nothing.

“Who is Adrian?””

Richard looked at me.

“The man who raised you was not the only person who protected you.””

I frowned.

“What does that mean?””

Before Richard could answer, Victoria whispered:

“Adrian was dangerous.””

Richard looked at her.

“You knew him.””

Victoria looked away.

“I knew what he was capable of.””

Julian stepped forward.

“Who is he?””

Richard answered.

“Daniel Cross’s oldest son.””

“And?””

Richard looked at me.

“And your biological uncle.””

My fingers tightened around the blanket.

An uncle.

Someone from my bloodline.

Someone who knew the truth.

“Where is he?””

Nobody answered.

That was when I understood.

They weren’t afraid of telling me.

They were afraid of him.

Richard finally spoke.

“Adrian disappeared after Michael died.””

Victoria whispered:

“Because he blamed everyone.””

“Everyone?””

Richard nodded.

“Michael. Daniel. Me.””

“Victoria?””

Her face hardened.

“Yes.””

I looked at her.

“Why?””

She didn’t answer.

Richard did.

“Because Adrian believed Victoria caused Elena’s death.””

My breath caught.

My mother.

Again.

Always my mother.

“What happened to Elena?””

Richard looked at me.

“The night Elena died, she was trying to meet Adrian.””

“Why?””

“To tell him the truth.””

“What truth?””

Richard reached into the file.

He pulled out a small photograph.

A woman.

A man.

And a child.

A little girl.

Me.

On the back was a handwritten note.

My mother’s handwriting.

I recognized it immediately.

*If anything happens to me, tell Claire she was never alone.*

I touched the words.

My eyes filled.

Then I noticed something else.

A second sentence.

One I had never seen before.

*Her brother knows where the evidence is hidden.*

I looked up.

“My brother?””

Richard nodded.

“No.””

He looked at me carefully.

“Your half-brother.””

The room spun.

Because suddenly, the secret was bigger than money.

Bigger than the Whitmores.

Bigger than Victoria.

My mother had hidden another child.

May you like

And somewhere in the world…

He knew the truth.
