Chapter 1: The Bathroom Door

Three hundred guests were standing beneath crystal chandeliers, applauding the perfect first dance at my sister-in-law’s luxury wedding when my water broke on the marble floor.

For one second, I thought I was imagining it.

The orchestra played softly. Cameras flashed around the ballroom. Seraphina’s silk gown spun beneath the golden lights like something from a magazine cover.

Then warmth spread beneath my shoes.

And a contraction ripped through me so sharply that I grabbed the edge of the table just to stay upright.

“Julian.””

My voice barely came out.

My husband turned immediately. The smile disappeared from his face the second he saw me.

“Claire?””

He pushed through the crowd toward me.

“Oh my God. Is it happening?””

I nodded, breathing through the pain.

“I think our baby is coming.””

Julian reached for my hand.

“We need to get you to a hospital. Right now.””

But before his fingers touched mine, someone stepped between us.

Victoria Whitmore.

My mother-in-law.

She wore a diamond necklace that probably cost more than my car, and her expression looked exactly like it did whenever I embarrassed her.

Cold.

Controlled.

Annoyed.

Her eyes moved from my face to the small puddle forming on the marble floor.

Then she looked toward the photographers.

A dozen lenses were pointed at Seraphina.

Not me.

Yet.

“Not here,” Victoria whispered.

I stared at her.

“Excuse me?””

Another contraction came.

My knees almost gave out.

“I need an ambulance.””

Victoria grabbed my arm.

“Lower your voice.””

I couldn’t believe what I was hearing.

“My water broke.””

“Yes, I heard you.””

“Your grandchild is coming.””

Her jaw tightened.

“Seraphina waited two years for this wedding. She planned every second of tonight.””

I looked around the room.

People were still smiling.

Still celebrating.

Nobody knew that I was standing there terrified, carrying her family’s future grandchild.

“Victoria, please.””

But she didn’t look worried.

She looked angry.

“Follow me.””

Julian stepped forward.

“Mom, what are you doing?””

Victoria forced a smile.

“I’m handling it.””

“No, you’re not. Claire needs a doctor.””

“She needs privacy,” Victoria replied.

The way she said it made my stomach twist.

I should have listened to that feeling.

I should have screamed.

But another contraction hit, and I couldn’t think clearly.

Victoria guided me down a hallway away from the ballroom.

“Where are we going?”” I asked.

“To calm down.””

“I’m not stressed. I’m in labor.””

She ignored me.

The hallway near the bridal suite was empty. The music from the ballroom became distant.

Then Victoria opened a private bathroom door.

“Wait.””

I grabbed the frame.

“Victoria, what are you doing?””

She pushed harder.

“You’ll be comfortable here.””

The moment I stepped inside, she closed the door.

Then I heard it.

Click.

The lock.

My heart stopped.

I turned around.

“Victoria?””

No answer.

I grabbed the handle.

“Victoria, open this door.””

Her voice came from the other side.

“You are not ruining Seraphina’s wedding.””

I froze.

“What did you say?””

“You heard me.””

A wave of anger cut through the pain.

“My baby is coming.””

“And this is exactly why you should have stayed home.””

I stared at the door.

“You locked your pregnant daughter-in-law in a bathroom.””

“You’re being dramatic.””

“I need medical help!””

“You need to calm down.””

I started pounding.

“Julian!””

The music outside suddenly became louder.

Much louder.

The bass shook through the walls.

Victoria had turned up the volume.

She wasn’t hiding the wedding noise.

She was hiding me.

“Julian!”” I screamed again.

My hands shook as I reached for my phone.

Then I remembered.

My purse was still sitting beside our table.

Inside the ballroom.

Outside the locked door, I heard footsteps.

“Where is my wife?”” Julian demanded.

I pressed my face against the door.

“I’m here!””

But Victoria answered before he could hear me.

“She became overwhelmed and asked me to help her leave quietly.””

My blood ran cold.

Julian sounded confused.

“What?””

“She didn’t want to embarrass herself.””

“No. That doesn’t sound like Claire.””

I screamed harder.

“Julian! I’m in here!””

A contraction hit so violently that I dropped to the floor.

Then I heard another sound.

A door opening inside the bathroom.

I looked up.

The reflection in the mirror showed a woman stepping out from behind the stall.

The wedding planner.

Emily Carter.

She held her phone tightly in her hand.

Her face was pale.

“Claire…”

I wiped tears from my eyes.

“Emily?””

She looked at the locked door.

Then back at me.

“I heard everything.””

My breathing stopped.

“What?””

She swallowed.

“I recorded it.””

She turned the phone screen toward me.

But before she pressed play, she whispered:

“Claire, there’s something you need to hear.””

“What?””

Emily’s hands trembled.

“Victoria didn’t just lock you in here because of the wedding.””

The next contraction came.

And Emily pressed play.

A recording filled the bathroom.

Victoria’s voice.

Clear.

Cruel.

“Once Seraphina gets the attention she deserves, we’ll deal with Claire.””

I stared at the phone.

Because that wasn’t the worst part.

May you like

The worst part was the next sentence.

“I already made sure Julian won’t believe her.””
