Chapter 14: The Man Who Came Back

Three days after the wedding, my life no longer resembled the one I had woken up with.

I had a newborn daughter.

A husband trying to rebuild my trust.

A father-in-law who was alive after years of pretending to be dead.

And a family secret that had waited decades to destroy us.

But the strangest part was this:

I no longer wanted revenge.

I wanted answers.

Julian found me sitting by the hospital window.

Our daughter slept peacefully in my arms.

“You haven’t slept.””

I smiled faintly.

“Neither have you.””

He sat beside me.

For a while, we just watched our daughter breathe.

Then he whispered:

“I’m sorry.””

I looked at him.

“For what?””

“For not seeing what my mother was doing.””

I shook my head.

“You were manipulated too.””

“But I defended her.””

“You loved her.””

Julian looked down.

“I don’t know if I can forgive her.””

I looked at him.

“I don’t know if I can either.””

The door opened.

Richard walked in.

But he wasn’t alone.

A man stood behind him.

Older than Julian.

Younger than Richard.

His face carried something familiar.

Not a feature.

Not an expression.

Something deeper.

Something I couldn’t explain.

Richard looked at me.

“Claire.””

My body went still.

“This is Adrian.””

The man looked at me.

And tears immediately filled his eyes.

“I have waited a long time to meet you.””

I couldn’t speak.

Because I knew.

Before anyone said anything.

I knew.

“You’re my brother.””

Adrian nodded.

“Yes.””

The word was barely a whisper.

I stared at him.

“Why didn’t you find me?””

Pain crossed his face.

“I tried.””

“When?””

“Many times.””

“Then why?””

He looked at Richard.

Then at me.

“Because every time I got close, someone stopped me.””

My stomach tightened.

“Who?””

Adrian didn’t answer.

He didn’t need to.

Everyone already knew.

Victoria.

But Adrian surprised me.

“No.””

I looked at him.

“No?””

He shook his head.

“Victoria was part of it.””

“Part of what?””

He stepped closer.

“The reason our mother died.””

The room became cold.

Julian stood.

“Explain.””

Adrian looked at him.

“Your family thinks my mother was caught in the middle of a business war.””

He looked at me.

“She wasn’t.””

I held my daughter tighter.

“What was she?””

Adrian’s voice lowered.

“She was trying to expose a secret.””

Richard looked away.

Adrian continued.

“Daniel Cross didn’t build his empire alone.””

I frowned.

“Who helped him?””

Adrian looked at Richard.

And then said:

“The Whitmores.””

Julian froze.

“My family?””

“Yes.””

“No.””

Adrian nodded.

“Your grandfather’s company survived because Daniel Cross covered up illegal deals.””

Richard looked ashamed.

“I didn’t know everything.””

“But you knew enough.””

Richard didn’t argue.

Adrian turned back to me.

“Your mother found documents proving everything.””

“And she died because of them.””

“Yes.””

I looked at Richard.

“Why didn’t you tell me?””

Richard’s eyes filled.

“Because I was afraid.””

“Of Victoria?””

“No.””

He looked at Adrian.

“Of what would happen if Adrian found out.””

Adrian laughed bitterly.

“I was a child when I lost my mother.””

His voice broke.

“I spent years believing nobody cared.””

I looked at him.

“I would have cared.””

He looked at me.

“I know.””

That hurt more.

Because we had both lost years we could never get back.

Then Adrian reached into his jacket.

He pulled out a small metal box.

“I found this after Elena died.””

My mother’s name.

Again.

He placed it on the table.

“She left it for you.””

My hands shook.

“What is inside?””

Adrian looked at me.

“The truth.””

I opened the box.

Inside was a letter.

And a flash drive.

A note sat on top.

Five words.

*Claire, trust no one.*

My heart stopped.

Because beneath it was another line.

Written later.

In a different handwriting.

A handwriting I recognized.

May you like

Victoria’s.

*I found her.*
