Chapter 12: The Person We Never Suspected

Julian stared at the letter.

Then at me.

Then back at the page.

“That’s my name.””

I nodded.

“I know.””

His face went pale.

“No.””

The word came out quietly.

“No, that doesn’t make sense.””

Richard stepped forward.

“Let me see.””

Julian handed him the letter.

Richard read the final lines.

His expression changed.

Not confusion.

Recognition.

“You knew.””

Julian looked at him.

“What?””

Richard looked horrified.

“Not consciously.””

“What does that mean?””

Richard sat down.

“It means Michael was warning you.””

“About me?””

“No.””

Richard shook his head.

“About someone using you.””

Victoria’s words came back.

I was protecting Julian.

I looked at Richard.

“Who?””

Before he could answer, the hospital room door opened.

Victoria stood there.

Everyone froze.

A nurse tried to stop her.

“Ma’am, family only.””

Victoria looked at me.

“I am family.””

Julian stepped between us.

“No.””

She looked hurt.

“Julian.””

“No.””

His voice was different now.

Stronger.

“You don’t get to walk in here like nothing happened.””

Victoria looked at the baby.

Her expression softened.

For a second, she looked like a grandmother.

Then it disappeared.

“I need to explain.””

Richard laughed quietly.

“Now you want to explain?””

Victoria ignored him.

She looked at me.

“Claire, you need to understand something.””

I held my baby closer.

“What?””

“I never wanted you hurt.””

I almost laughed.

“You locked me in a bathroom.””

Her face tightened.

“I panicked.””

“No.””

I shook my head.

“You planned.””

Silence.

Victoria looked down.

Then whispered:

“Yes.””

Julian looked shocked.

The admission was worse than any denial.

“You admit it?””

Victoria nodded.

“I was afraid.””

“Of what?””

She looked at me.

“Of losing my son.””

Julian’s face broke.

“Mom.””

“I knew what would happen if Claire discovered the truth.””

“What truth?””

Victoria looked at him.

“The truth about your father.””

Richard stepped forward.

“Enough.””

Victoria turned.

“No.””

Her voice cracked.

“Everyone thinks I’m the monster.””

She looked around the room.

“But nobody talks about what Richard did.””

Richard became still.

Victoria continued.

“Your father didn’t just hide Claire’s identity.””

She looked at me.

“He hid your mother’s death.””

My fingers tightened around the blanket.

“What?””

Richard closed his eyes.

Victoria smiled sadly.

“Ask him.””

I looked at Richard.

“Is that true?””

He didn’t answer.

That was answer enough.

Julian whispered:

“Dad?””

Richard finally spoke.

“Your mother died because of complications.””

Victoria shook her head.

“No.””

Richard looked at her.

“Stop.””

“You owe her the truth.””

I felt my heartbeat pounding.

“My mother didn’t die naturally?””

Richard looked at me.

And tears filled his eyes.

“No.””

The room went silent.

“Then how?””

Richard looked at Victoria.

“Because someone tried to silence her.””

My body went cold.

Julian stared at his mother.

“Mom?””

Victoria shook her head.

“I didn’t know it would happen.””

Richard whispered:

“But you ordered it.””

Julian stepped back.

“No.””

Victoria looked at her son.

“Julian…”

He looked devastated.

The woman who raised him.

The woman who had always controlled every detail.

Now standing accused of something impossible.

Then Richard reached into his coat.

And pulled out one final piece of evidence.

A recording device.

“I saved this for twenty years.””

Victoria’s face changed.

“What is that?””

Richard pressed the button.

A voice filled the room.

A younger Victoria.

A voice from the past.

A voice saying:

“Michael Bennett cannot be allowed to tell Claire who she really is.””

Everyone froze.

Then another voice answered.

A man’s voice.

A voice I recognized.

Because I had heard it my entire life.

The voice of the man who raised me.

Michael Bennett.

And he said:

“Then we need to make sure Claire never finds out the truth about her mother.””

I stared at the recording.

Because my father wasn’t just hiding a secret.

He was part of one.

And nobody in that room knew the most important truth yet.

My mother had left behind a second child.
