Chapter 11: The Letter From My Father
The delivery room was bright.
Too bright.
Doctors moved around me.
Monitors beeped.
Nurses spoke calmly.
But my mind was somewhere else.
Back in the hallway.
Back with the envelope.
Back with the truth that everyone seemed determined to hide.
Julian stood beside me wearing a hospital gown over his expensive wedding clothes.
It was almost ridiculous.
A groom from a luxury wedding standing in a delivery room.
A husband watching his entire family collapse.
He squeezed my hand.
“Are you okay?””
I looked at him.
“No.””
He nodded.
“Me neither.””
For the first time that night, we laughed.
Just a little.
A tiny moment of normal.
Then his expression became serious.
“I need you to know something.””
“What?””
“Whatever happens next, I’m with you.””
I looked away.
“You don’t even know what the truth is.””
“I know enough.””
“Your family is falling apart.””
He nodded.
“Maybe it needed to.””
The doctor entered.
“We’re getting close.””
My heart raced.
The baby.
The one thing in this world that wasn’t part of a secret.
A few hours later, after exhaustion and pain and tears, I heard the sound I had been waiting for.
My baby crying.
Everything stopped.
The secrets.
The betrayal.
The anger.
Everything.
Julian cried before I did.
He laughed and covered his face.
“Claire.””
I looked at him.
“Our baby.””
I smiled through tears.
“Our baby.””
For a few minutes, nothing else existed.
Then the door opened.
Richard stood there.
Holding the envelope.
The happiness faded slightly.
Not because of him.
Because I knew.
The truth was waiting.
Richard approached slowly.
“I’ll leave if you want.””
I looked at the envelope.
“No.””
He handed it to me.
“Your father wrote this.””
My hands shook.
“Michael?””
Richard nodded.
“He knew he might not get the chance to tell you himself.””
I opened it carefully.
The handwriting was old.
The first line made my breath catch.
*My dearest Claire,*
I pressed my fingers against the paper.
I had never received a letter from him.
Not like this.
I read.
If you are reading this, then I failed to protect you from the truth.
My eyes filled.
I spent my life trying to give you something I never had: a normal childhood.
Julian sat beside me silently.
You will hear many stories about your family. Some will be true. Some will be told by people trying to protect themselves.
I continued.
The Whitmores are not your enemies. But they are not innocent either.
My heart tightened.
Then I reached the next paragraph.
Richard tried to help me. I believe he did. But he made one mistake that changed everything.
I looked up at Richard.
He lowered his eyes.
I kept reading.
He trusted the wrong person.
A chill ran through me.
The next line was underlined.
The person who betrayed me was not Richard Whitmore.
I stopped.
Julian leaned closer.
“What?””
I read the next words.
It was someone closer.
My breathing changed.
Someone closer.
Someone inside the family.
The page continued.
I discovered Victoria was not acting alone.
I looked toward Richard.
Then Julian.
Then back at the letter.
She had help.
The room felt cold.
I turned the page.
And the final sentence on the second page made my blood freeze.
Claire, the person who destroyed our family is someone you will trust completely.
I stopped reading.
Julian noticed.
“What does it say?””
I couldn’t answer.
Because another line appeared at the bottom.
A name.
A name I never expected.
May you like
A name that made Julian stand up immediately.
Because it was his.
