Chapter 9: The Enemy Inside My Home

The worst betrayals are not the ones that come from strangers.

They are the ones that come from people who know exactly where you keep your heart.

I looked around the room.

My father.

My security chief.

My stepmother.

People who had been part of my life for years.

People who had watched Sofia grow.

People who had stood beside me while I mourned Elena.

And one of them had known the truth.

I closed Elena’s notebook.

“Who was she afraid of?””

Nobody answered.

I looked at Claire.

“Tell me.””

Claire hesitated.

“She never told me the name.””

My frustration grew.

“She left clues but not answers?””

“She was trying to protect you.””

“By making me search?””

Claire nodded.

“She believed if the wrong person found out she had evidence, they would destroy it.””

I looked at the notebook.

Elena had planned everything.

Even after she was gone.

Thomas stepped closer.

“There is something else.””

I turned.

“What?””

“Before Elena disappeared, she moved something.””

“What?””

“Ownership documents.””

I frowned.

“My company?””

“No.””

Thomas looked at Sofia.

“Her inheritance.””

I felt my chest tighten.

“What inheritance?””

Thomas looked surprised.

“Elena never told you?””

I shook my head.

“No.””

Thomas looked at Richard.

“You knew.””

My father didn’t respond.

That was enough.

I turned toward him.

“What did Elena inherit?””

Richard finally spoke.

“A trust.””

“How much?””

He hesitated.

“Enough to change everything.””

I stared at him.

“So someone wanted access to it.””

Thomas nodded.

“That was Elena’s theory.””

Vanessa suddenly laughed.

Everyone looked at her.

“You’re all acting like I’m the villain.””

Nobody spoke.

She wiped her eyes.

“You have no idea what Elena was hiding.””

I stepped forward.

“Then tell me.””

She looked at me.

“She knew your father was involved.””

Richard’s face changed.

“Don’t.””

Vanessa ignored him.

“She knew Richard was moving money through accounts connected to the company.””

I looked at my father.

“Is that true?””

Richard said nothing.

The silence answered.

Vanessa continued.

“And Elena planned to expose him.””

Thomas looked furious.

“She exposed you too.””

Vanessa looked at him.

“You don’t understand.””

“No.””

Thomas stepped closer.

“You were willing to destroy a child’s memories because you were scared.””

Vanessa looked at Sofia.

For a second, guilt appeared.

Then it disappeared.

“She would have lost everything if Elena succeeded.””

I froze.

“Everything?””

Vanessa realized she had said too much.

“What did Elena have that could destroy you?””

Nobody moved.

Then Marco spoke.

“Boss.””

I turned.

He held a small device.

“I found something hidden inside the security system.””

“What?””

“A recording.””

My heart raced.

“From when?””

“Six years ago.””

The room became silent.

Marco connected it to the screen.

No phone.

No documents.

Just an old audio file.

A woman’s voice filled the room.

Elena.

My knees almost gave out.

“Daniel…”

Her voice.

After six years.

Sofia covered her mouth.

“Mommy…”

I grabbed the table for support.

The recording continued.

“If you are hearing this, I failed to stop them.””

Everyone froze.

Elena continued.

“But I need you to know the truth.””

A pause.

Then her voice became softer.

“Daniel, the person who betrayed me wasn’t Vanessa.””

I looked at Vanessa.

She looked terrified.

The recording continued.

“It was someone I trusted because I believed family would never hurt me.””

My heart stopped.

The entire room waited.

Then Elena said the name.

And every person turned toward the same person.

The person who had been standing beside me from the beginning.

The person who had helped me bury the truth.

May you like

The recording ended with one final sentence.

“Daniel… your enemy has been sitting at your table all along.””
