Chapter 3: The Secret Before Vanessa Became Family
I spent the next hour trying to convince myself there was another explanation.
A mistake.
A misunderstanding.
Anything except what my instincts were screaming.
Because if Vanessa had been involved with Elena’s hidden belongings…
then every memory of the last six years needed to be questioned.
I returned to the ballroom with Sofia beside me.
The guests were still whispering.
They knew something had changed.
They just didn’t know what.
Vanessa stood near the windows overlooking the city.
When she saw me approaching, she forced a smile.
“Can we talk privately?””
I looked at Sofia.
“Marco will stay with her.””
Sofia held onto my hand.
“Don’t leave me.””
My heart broke.
I kneeled down.
“I’m right here.””
She nodded slowly.
Then I walked toward Vanessa.
The woman who had spent years calling herself my daughter’s second mother.
The woman I trusted inside my home.
The woman now standing in front of me with secrets.
“What did you find?”” she asked.
I didn’t answer immediately.
Instead, I placed the photograph on the table between us.
Her eyes moved toward it.
And I watched her reaction.
A person who had nothing to hide would have looked confused.
Vanessa looked terrified.
“You went through Elena’s things?””
I stared at her.
“That’s your first question?””
She looked away.
“Daniel…”
“No.””
My voice became colder.
“I want the truth.””
She took a breath.
“There are things about Elena you don’t know.””
I felt my chest tighten.
“What things?””
Vanessa looked around the ballroom.
The same place where she had humiliated my daughter hours earlier.
“The kind of things that could destroy everything you believe.””
I stepped closer.
“You don’t get to talk about protecting me after what you did to Sofia.””
Her expression softened slightly.
“I made a mistake.””
“No.””
I shook my head.
“You made a choice.””
For the first time, Vanessa looked angry.
“You think Elena was perfect?””
I said nothing.
“She wasn’t.””
The words hung between us.
I wanted to walk away.
But something stopped me.
Because Vanessa wasn’t just defending herself.
She was trying to redirect me.
Trying to make me question Elena.
“Why were you with her in that photograph?””
Vanessa looked down.
“We were friends.””
“Friends don’t hide letters.””
Her face changed.
“You opened it?””
I froze.
That reaction told me everything.
“You knew there was a letter?””
Vanessa immediately realized her mistake.
“No.””
But it was too late.
She knew.
She knew about the hidden compartment.
She knew about Elena’s letter.
And she knew exactly what she was trying to destroy.
I stepped back.
“How long have you known about this?””
Vanessa didn’t answer.
“Vanessa.””
Her silence was louder than any confession.
Then Sofia suddenly called my name.
“Daddy!””
I turned around.
She was standing beside Marco.
Holding something in her hands.
Another photograph.
Her eyes were wide.
“Mommy and Vanessa were together before you met her.””
I walked over.
The photograph showed Elena and Vanessa outside a building.
A building I recognized.
My old company office.
But that wasn’t what made my heart stop.
It was the person standing behind them.
Someone I knew.
Someone who was supposed to have no connection to Elena.
Someone who disappeared from our lives years ago.
I looked closer.
Then I heard Vanessa whisper behind me.
“Daniel…”
I turned.
Her face was pale.
“What?””
She looked at the photograph.
And finally admitted the words she had been hiding.
“Your wife found out something about me.””
The room became silent.
“What did she find out?””
Vanessa’s lips trembled.
“She found out who I really was.””
I stared at her.
And before she could say another word…
the ballroom doors opened.
A man walked inside.
A man I thought I would never see again.
Sofia looked at him.
Then looked at me.
“Daddy…”
Her voice shook.
“Who is that?””
I didn’t answer.
Because I knew exactly who he was.
And I knew why Elena had hidden that letter.

The man standing at the door was the last person my wife trusted.
And the first person who knew the truth about her disappearance.
