Chapter 12: What Elena Left For Sofia
I spent the next hour carefully examining every piece of the wooden box.
The same box Vanessa tried to destroy.
The same box everyone thought only contained photographs.
But Elena had never been careless.
She knew people would search for documents.
She knew people would look for evidence.
So she hid the truth somewhere nobody would expect.
Inside a memory.
Sofia sat beside me at the table.
Watching quietly.
“Daddy?””
“Yes?””
“Is Mommy still helping us?””
I looked at her.
My heart broke.
“Yes.””
She touched the broken wood.
“I think she is.””
I smiled sadly.
Because somehow my eight-year-old daughter understood something the adults around her forgot.
Love doesn’t disappear.
Marco examined the pieces carefully.
“There’s something unusual.””
“What?””
He pointed toward the bottom panel.
“This section was replaced.””
I looked closer.
A hidden layer.
Another secret compartment.
My hands shook.
I opened it.
Inside was a small key.
And a note.
Sofia picked it up.
“It’s Mommy’s handwriting.””
She smiled through tears.
“Can you read it?””
I nodded.
The note was short.
Daniel,
If you found this, it means Sofia protected the one thing nobody could take from her.
Her memories.
My eyes blurred.
Elena knew.
She knew someone might try to erase her.
She continued:
The truth is not hidden in money.
It is not hidden in power.
It is hidden in the person who remembers.
I looked at Sofia.
The note continued.
Take the key.
Open the place where our first promise began.
I froze.
Our first promise.
I knew exactly what she meant.
The old lake house.
The place where Elena and I met.
The place where we promised we would always protect our family.
I looked up.
“We’re going there.””
Everyone looked at me.
Richard stood.
“Daniel, don’t.””
I turned.
“Why?””
His face changed.
Because he knew.
I walked closer.
“Why don’t you want me to go?””
No answer.
That was enough.
Thomas grabbed his jacket.
“I’m coming with you.””
Marco nodded.
“Me too.””
Vanessa stepped forward.
“Daniel.””
I looked at her.
“What?””
She looked different.
Not powerful.
Not arrogant.
Just scared.
“Please.””
I waited.
She swallowed.
“I need to tell you something before you go.””
The room became quiet.
“What?””
Vanessa looked at Sofia.
“I didn’t destroy that box because I hated Elena.””
Nobody moved.
“I destroyed it because I was afraid of what was inside.””
My expression hardened.
“You knew?””
She nodded.
“I knew there was something hidden.””
“Who told you?””
She looked toward Eleanor.
My mother closed her eyes.
I felt the anger return.
“You all knew.””
Vanessa whispered:
“But I didn’t know what Elena discovered.””
I studied her face.
For the first time, I believed she was afraid of someone too.
“Who are you afraid of?””
Vanessa looked at the floor.
Then she said something nobody expected.
“I’m afraid of the person who ordered Elena’s disappearance.””
The room went silent.
“Who?””
Vanessa looked at me.
Her voice barely came out.
“The person who has been pretending to help you find the truth.””
My eyes narrowed.
“Who?””
Vanessa took a breath.
Then she said the name.
And every piece finally started falling into place.
“Daniel…”
A pause.
“Look at Marco.””
I slowly turned.
Marco stood frozen.
His face had changed.
May you like
And for the first time…
he looked afraid.
