Chapter 13: The Final Betrayal
For six years, I trusted Marco with my life.
Not just my business.
Not just my security.
My life.
He was the man who stood beside me when Elena died.
The man who watched over Sofia when I was too broken to think clearly.
The man I believed would protect my family no matter what.
And now Vanessa was telling me he was the person behind everything.
I stared at him.
“Is it true?””
Marco didn’t answer.
That hurt more than any confession could have.
Because Marco always had an answer.
Always had an explanation.
But now…
nothing.
I stepped closer.
“Marco.””
His eyes met mine.
And I saw something I never thought I would see.
Regret.
“I never wanted it to go this far.””
The room went silent.
Sofia moved closer to me.
I immediately placed myself between her and everyone else.
“What did you do?””
Marco looked down.
“I was trying to fix a mistake.””
“A mistake?””
My voice shook.
“My wife disappeared.””
His face tightened.
“I know.””
“My daughter lost her mother.””
“I know.””
“You knew the truth.””
Marco closed his eyes.
“Yes.””
The word destroyed the last bit of trust I had left.
Thomas stepped forward.
“You knew Elena was in danger.””
Marco looked at him.
“I tried to stop it.””
Thomas laughed bitterly.
“No.””
“You helped hide it.””
Marco looked away.
I remembered every moment.
Every time he changed the subject.
Every time he told me there was nothing unusual.
Every time he convinced me to stop searching.
He wasn’t protecting me.
He was controlling what I knew.
“Why?””
Marco looked at the floor.
“Because I owed Richard.””
I turned toward my father.
Richard looked ashamed.
“What does that mean?””
Marco answered.
“Years ago, Richard saved my family from financial ruin.””
Richard spoke quietly.
“I helped him once.””
“And he spent years repaying that debt.””
Marco nodded.
“Yes.””
I felt sick.
“So you chose loyalty to him over Elena.””
“No.””
Marco looked at me.
“I chose fear.””
Nobody spoke.
He continued.
“When Elena discovered what Richard and Vanessa were involved in, she came to me.””
“Because she trusted you.””
“Yes.””
His voice cracked.
“She asked me to help her expose everything.””
I stared at him.
“Then why didn’t you?””
Marco looked toward Sofia.
“Because someone threatened her.””
My heart stopped.
“Who?””
Marco hesitated.
Then looked at Eleanor.
My mother’s expression changed.
“You.””
The room froze.
I looked at Eleanor.
“No.””
Marco nodded.
“She was the one who warned me.””
Eleanor whispered:
“Marco…”
“Don’t.””
His voice became louder.
“I spent six years carrying this.””
He looked at me.
“Eleanor told me if Elena exposed everything, Sofia would lose her entire family.””
I shook my head.
“That makes no sense.””
Marco looked at me.
“She made me believe protecting Sofia meant keeping the truth buried.””
I looked at my mother.
“Is that true?””
Eleanor’s silence answered.
Sofia started crying.
“Why did everyone lie?””
Nobody had an answer.
I knelt beside her.
“Sweetheart…”
She wiped her tears.
“I just wanted Mommy’s box.””
Those words hurt more than anything.
Because while adults fought over money and secrets…
a little girl only wanted a piece of her mother.
I stood up.
“Where is the evidence?””
Marco looked surprised.
“What?””
“Elena’s evidence.””
He lowered his eyes.
“She never trusted me completely.””
I froze.
“What?””
“She gave me only part of the information.””
A bitter smile crossed his face.
“She knew I was afraid.””
Marco reached into his jacket.
He pulled out a small key.
“The rest is at the lake house.””
My heart stopped.
The same place Elena mentioned.
The place where our first promise began.
Thomas stepped closer.
“Then we go now.””
But before anyone moved, my phone rang.
A call from an unknown number.
I answered.
Nobody spoke.
Then I heard a woman’s voice.
Soft.
Familiar.
A voice I hadn’t heard in six years.
“Daniel.””
My entire body froze.
Sofia looked at me.
“Daddy?””
The voice continued.
“Please don’t trust anyone in that room.””
My heart stopped.
Because I knew that voice.
May you like
It was impossible.
But it was Elena.
