Chapter 5: Elena’s Last Warning

I couldn’t move.

The envelope in Thomas’s hand felt heavier than anything I had ever held.

Six years.

Six years wondering if Elena left this world knowing how much I loved her.

Six years wondering if she was afraid.

Six years believing there were no answers.

And now I was standing inches away from the truth.

“Give it to me.””

Thomas didn’t move.

“Daniel, before you read this, you need to understand something.””

“What?””

“Elena wasn’t trying to protect herself.””

He looked at Sofia.

“She was protecting her daughter.””

Sofia pressed closer to me.

I took the envelope.

The handwriting on the front made my chest tighten.

Daniel.

Only my name.

Nothing else.

I opened it carefully.

Inside was a single letter.

My hands shook as I read.

“Daniel,

If you are reading this, something happened before I could tell you myself.

Please don’t blame yourself.

You always believed you could protect everyone you loved.

But there are people who hide behind kindness.

People who smile while they destroy.””

I stopped.

My eyes moved toward Vanessa.

She was watching me.

Too closely.

The letter continued.

“I discovered something about Vanessa that concerns Sofia’s future.

I wanted to believe I was wrong.

I wanted to believe my fears were just fear.

But the evidence keeps leading me back to the same place.””

My breathing became heavier.

“What evidence?”” I whispered.

Thomas looked away.

Vanessa suddenly spoke.

“Daniel, don’t do this.””

I ignored her.

The letter continued.

“Do not trust anyone who tells you to forget me.

Do not let anyone remove my memories from Sofia’s life.

And most importantly…

find the person who helped Vanessa hide the truth.””

I stopped reading.

Person.

Not people.

Person.

Someone else was involved.

I looked at Thomas.

“Who helped her?””

Thomas didn’t answer.

Vanessa did.

“No one.””

Her voice was too fast.

Too defensive.

I folded the letter.

“You expect me to believe that?””

She looked frustrated.

“I was trying to move this family forward.””

“You destroyed my daughter’s memory box.””

“I was trying to stop her from living in grief.””

I stepped closer.

“No.””

My voice lowered.

“You were trying to stop her from remembering.””

Vanessa’s expression changed.

For a second, the confident woman disappeared.

And I saw something underneath.

Panic.

Marco’s phone rang.

He stepped away to answer.

A few seconds later, he returned.

“Boss.””

“What?””

He hesitated.

“The security footage from tonight is missing.””

I looked at him.

“What do you mean missing?””

“The camera recording from the ballroom was deleted.””

Everyone became silent.

I turned toward Vanessa.

She shook her head immediately.

“I didn’t do that.””

“Then who did?””

Nobody answered.

Thomas walked toward me.

“Daniel, there’s something else you need to know.””

I looked at him.

“What?””

“The night Elena disappeared, she wasn’t alone.””

My stomach dropped.

“Who was with her?””

Thomas looked at Vanessa.

Then at me.

“She called me.””

I froze.

“You were there?””

Thomas nodded slowly.

“She told me she discovered the truth about Vanessa.””

Sofia covered her mouth.

“My mommy knew?””

Thomas’s eyes filled with sadness.

“She knew something was wrong.””

I looked at him.

“Why didn’t you tell me?””

His face broke.

“Because Elena begged me not to.””

“Why?””

Thomas looked at Sofia.

“Because she said if Vanessa knew you had the information…”

He stopped.

I waited.

“What?””

Thomas whispered.

“She would come after Sofia.””

The room went cold.

I looked at my daughter.

The same little girl who had just wanted to protect a wooden box.

A box someone desperately wanted destroyed.

Then Sofia suddenly pointed toward the broken pieces on the floor.

“Daddy…”

Everyone turned.

She was holding something small.

A tiny piece of wood.

“There’s another thing inside.””

I walked over.

Behind the hidden compartment was another message.

Not a letter.

Not a photograph.

A name.

Carved into the wood.

A name Elena had hidden six years ago.

I stared at it.

And my blood ran cold.

Because it was the name of the person who helped Vanessa.

Marco stepped closer.

“Boss…”

I looked up.

May you like

The name was clear.

And it belonged to someone standing in this room.
