Chapter 6: The Person Behind The Secret

Nobody spoke.

The name carved into the wood sat between us like a confession.

Marco.

My security chief.

My trusted employee.

The man who had protected my family for years.

The man who had stood beside me when Elena died.

I stared at him.

He didn’t move.

He didn’t defend himself.

That scared me more than anything.

“Marco.””

My voice was quiet.

Too quiet.

He looked at me.

“Daniel…”

“No.””

I raised the wooden piece.

“Explain.””

His eyes dropped.

Vanessa suddenly stepped forward.

“Daniel, this is ridiculous.””

I turned toward her.

“Are you defending him too?””

She stopped.

That was enough.

Thomas noticed it too.

“You already knew.””

Vanessa looked angry.

“Be careful what you say.””

Thomas laughed bitterly.

“Still pretending?””

Marco finally spoke.

“I can explain.””

I looked at him.

“Then explain.””

He took a deep breath.

“When Elena asked me for help, I thought she was making a mistake.””

The words hit me.

“You helped her?””

Marco nodded.

“She came to me weeks before she disappeared.””

“Why?””

He looked at Vanessa.

“Because she believed someone inside the family was lying.””

Vanessa’s face tightened.

Marco continued.

“She asked me to investigate.””

I felt betrayed.

“You investigated my wife’s concerns and never told me?””

“She made me promise.””

I shook my head.

“She was my wife.””

“I know.””

Marco’s voice cracked.

“And that’s why I agreed.””

The room became silent.

Sofia sat beside Thomas, watching adults reveal secrets she was too young to understand.

I walked toward Marco.

“What did you find?””

Marco looked down.

“I found that Vanessa had been accessing private information about Elena.””

“What kind of information?””

“Her accounts. Her personal files. Her medical records.””

My jaw tightened.

“Why?””

Marco hesitated.

“Because Vanessa believed Elena was going to expose her.””

Vanessa stepped back.

“You’re lying.””

Marco looked at her.

“No.””

His voice was calm.

“You know I’m not.””

I turned toward Vanessa.

“Why?””

For the first time, she didn’t have an answer.

I thought about every moment.

Every conversation.

Every time she told Sofia to stop talking about Elena.

Every time she removed photographs from the house.

Every time she said she was helping my daughter heal.

She wasn’t helping.

She was erasing.

Thomas looked at me.

“Elena discovered something bigger than Vanessa.””

“What?””

Thomas pointed toward the letter.

“The person Vanessa was protecting.””

I looked at him.

“Who?””

Before he could answer, the lights suddenly went out.

The ballroom fell into darkness.

Sofia gasped.

I immediately moved toward her.

“Stay with me.””

Marco reached for his flashlight.

Then we heard it.

A door opening.

Someone moving through the dark hallway.

“Who’s there?””

No answer.

I held Sofia close.

The footsteps stopped.

Then a voice spoke.

A voice I recognized.

“I wouldn’t open that letter if I were you.””

My blood froze.

Because the voice wasn’t Vanessa.

It wasn’t Marco.

It belonged to someone I trusted even more.

The lights came back on.

Everyone turned toward the doorway.

And standing there was the one person I never expected.

My own father.

Richard Whitmore.

He looked at the letter in my hand.

Then at Sofia.

And his expression changed.

“Daniel…”

He slowly stepped inside.

“You have no idea what Elena discovered.””

I stared at him.

Because my father had spent six years comforting me after Elena’s death.

Six years telling me to move on.

Six years telling me the past couldn’t be changed.

But now he was standing in front of me.

Afraid.

Thomas whispered:

“He knows.””

I looked at my father.

“Knows what?””

Richard’s face hardened.

Then he said the words that shattered everything I believed.

“Your wife didn’t disappear because of Vanessa.””

May you like

A pause.

“She disappeared because she found out what I did.””
