Chapter 10: The Confession Behind Closed Doors
Nobody moved after the recording ended.
The silence was unbearable.
A room full of people.
A lifetime of memories.
And one question hanging between us.
Who had Elena trusted enough to call family?
I looked at everyone.
Then my eyes stopped on Richard.
My father.
His face had changed.
Not anger.
Not confusion.
Fear.
The kind of fear someone feels when a secret they buried finally comes back.
I whispered his name.
“Dad.””
He didn’t answer.
That hurt more than anything.
Because a stranger could betray me.
A stranger could lie.
But my father?
The man who held me after Elena’s funeral?
The man who told me he would always protect my family?
I stepped closer.
“Was it you?””
Richard looked at me.
For several seconds, he said nothing.
Then he slowly sat down.
“I never wanted this to happen.””
My chest tightened.
That wasn’t a denial.
Sofia moved closer to Marco.
I kept my voice steady.
“You don’t get to say that.””
Richard looked at the floor.
“I made choices.””
“No.””
I shook my head.
“You made decisions.””
He closed his eyes.
“I thought I was saving the company.””
The words felt like a punch.
“The company?””
I stared at him.
“My wife disappeared.””
His voice became quieter.
“I know.””
“My daughter lost her mother.””
“I know.””
“I spent six years believing I failed her.””
Richard looked up.
“And I carried that guilt.””
I laughed bitterly.
“You carried guilt?””
I pointed toward Sofia.
“She carried the pain.””
Nobody spoke.
Richard looked at my daughter.
His expression changed.
For the first time, I saw regret.
Real regret.
But regret doesn’t erase damage.
“Tell me everything.””
Richard took a long breath.
“Years ago, before you became CEO, the company was struggling.””
I crossed my arms.
“And?””
“And I borrowed money.””
“From who?””
Richard hesitated.
“Private investors.””
Thomas immediately spoke.
“Not investors.””
Everyone looked at him.
Thomas’s face was cold.
“People who wanted control.””
Richard looked angry.
“You don’t understand.””
“No,” Thomas replied.
“You don’t understand what Elena discovered.””
Richard looked away.
That was when I knew.
Elena had been right.
My father had been hiding something.
“What did Vanessa have to do with it?””
Richard didn’t answer.
I stepped closer.
“What did Vanessa have to do with it?””
Finally, he whispered:
“She was the connection.””
The room froze.
Vanessa’s face went pale.
Richard continued.
“She introduced me to the people who offered the money.””
I looked at Vanessa.
“You knew.””
She shook her head.
“I didn’t know what they wanted.””
Thomas laughed.
“You knew enough.””
Vanessa looked at him.
“You have no idea what I sacrificed.””
I stared at her.
“You sacrificed my daughter’s memories.””
She looked away.
Then Marco interrupted.
“Boss.””
I turned.
“The recording wasn’t complete.””
“What?””
He looked at the device.
“There’s another file.””
Everyone became silent again.
Marco pressed play.
Static filled the room.
Then Elena’s voice returned.
“If you found this second recording, it means you already know Richard was involved.””
My father lowered his head.
“But please understand something.””
Elena paused.
“He wasn’t the person who started this.””
I frowned.
The room became still.
Elena continued.
“The person who planned everything is someone closer than you think.””
My heart raced.
Closer?
The recording continued.
“Someone who knew my habits.””
“Someone who knew my fears.””
“Someone who knew exactly how to make Daniel trust them.””
Then the audio cut.
Everyone looked at Marco.
“Is that all?””
He shook his head.
“No.””
“There’s another part.””
“Play it.””
Marco hesitated.
“Boss…”
“Play it.””
The final seconds loaded.
Then Elena spoke again.
This time, her voice sounded different.
Like she was whispering because someone was nearby.
“Daniel, if you hear this…”
A pause.
“Do not trust the person who claims they protected you.””
My blood went cold.
Because only one person had said those words.
Someone standing in this room.
Someone who had spent years telling me they were protecting my family.
Richard.
But before I could react, Sofia suddenly screamed.
“Daddy!””
Everyone turned.
She was looking toward the doorway.
A shadow stood there.
Someone who had entered without anyone noticing.
And when the person stepped into the light…
I realized the truth was even worse than I imagined.
May you like
Because it wasn’t Richard.
It was someone I had never suspected.
