Chapter 14: The Truth Elena Saved
I couldn’t breathe.
The world around me disappeared.
The voices.
The room.
The people standing around me.
Everything faded.
Because all I could hear was her voice.
Elena.
“Daniel?””
I couldn’t speak.
My hand tightened around the phone.
“Who is this?””
A pause.
Then a quiet breath.
“It’s me.””
My knees almost gave out.
“No.””
The word came out as a whisper.
“It can’t be.””
Sofia looked at me.
“Daddy?””
I turned away from everyone.
Especially Eleanor.
Especially Marco.
Especially Vanessa.
Because someone had lied to me for six years.
And now the impossible was happening.
“Elena?””
A small sound came through the phone.
A cry.
“Yes.””
I covered my mouth.
My wife was alive.
Or at least…
someone who sounded exactly like her.
“Where are you?””
“I don’t have much time.””
My heart raced.
“Tell me where you are.””
“Daniel, listen.””
Her voice became urgent.
“Do not go to the lake house alone.””
I looked around the room.
Everyone was watching me.
“How are you calling me?””
“I planned this.””
“What?””
“I knew they would try to hide the truth.””
My eyes filled with tears.
“Elena, Sofia…”
A silence.
Then I heard her cry.
“Is she okay?””
I looked at my daughter.
“She’s here.””
A broken sound came from the phone.
“My baby.””
Sofia heard the voice.
She stepped closer.
“Is that Mommy?””
I couldn’t answer.
Elena heard her.
“Sofia?””
My daughter froze.
“Mommy?””
The phone went silent.
Then Elena whispered:
“I’m sorry.””
Sofia started crying.
“Mommy!””
I held her close.
“Elena, where are you?””
But before she could answer, the call became distorted.
“Daniel…”
The connection weakened.
“One person knows where I am.””
“Who?””
A pause.
Then Elena said:
“Your mother.””
The call ended.
I stood there frozen.
Everyone reacted differently.
Marco looked shocked.
Thomas looked confused.
Vanessa looked terrified.
But Eleanor…
Eleanor looked like she had known this moment would come.
I turned toward her.
“You knew.””
She didn’t deny it.
“Yes.””
My heart shattered.
“You knew Elena was alive?””
Eleanor looked away.
“I knew she survived.””
The room exploded.
Sofia cried.
Thomas shouted.
Marco stepped back.
I couldn’t hear anything.
My own mother knew my wife was alive.
And she let me mourn her.
For six years.
“Where is she?””
Eleanor closed her eyes.
“I was trying to protect everyone.””
I walked toward her.
“You don’t get to use that word anymore.””
She looked at me.
“Daniel…”
“No.””
My voice was shaking.
“You let me bury my wife.””
“I thought she was safer hidden.””
“From who?””
Eleanor looked at me.
“From the people who wanted her gone.””
I froze.
“Who?””
She looked toward the door.
Then whispered:
“The people who thought she knew too much.””
Marco stepped forward.
“Boss.””
I turned.
He pointed toward the lake house key.
“Elena wanted you to find something first.””
“What?””
Marco looked serious.
“The truth about why she disappeared.””
We drove to the lake house before sunrise.
Nobody spoke.
When we arrived, the place looked exactly the same.
The porch.
The trees.
The wooden steps where Elena and I sat after our first date.
Inside, everything was covered in dust.
Except one thing.
A small wooden box on the table.
Not the broken one.
A different one.
I opened it.
Inside was a letter.
From Elena.
Daniel,
If you are reading this, then you finally know.
I am alive.
But I need you to understand why I left.
I didn’t leave because I stopped loving you.
I left because someone I trusted tried to take our daughter from me.
My hands shook.
I continued reading.
The person who planned everything is not who you think.
They are not outside our family.
They are inside it.
Then I reached the final line.
And my heart stopped.
Because Elena had written one name.
The person who tried to destroy our family.
The person who wanted Sofia gone.
May you like
The person I never suspected.
My own sister.
