Chapter 4: The Man Elena Trusted
The man standing at the ballroom entrance looked exactly like the memory I had tried to bury.
Older.
Tired.
But unmistakable.
Thomas Reed.
Elena’s younger brother.
The man who disappeared six years ago after my wife’s death.
The man everyone believed abandoned his own family.
Sofia stared at him with confusion.
“Daddy… who is he?””
I couldn’t answer immediately.
Because the last time I saw Thomas, he was standing outside Elena’s funeral, refusing to speak to anyone.
Then he vanished.
No calls.
No messages.
No explanation.
And now he was standing in my home.
On my daughter’s birthday.
Right after we discovered a secret Elena had hidden from everyone.
Thomas slowly walked into the ballroom.
His eyes went directly to Sofia.
For a moment, his expression broke.
“You’re so big now.””
Sofia looked at me.
“Do I know him?””
I swallowed.
“No, sweetheart.””
Thomas looked hurt by those words.
But he nodded.
“That’s because I wasn’t allowed to be there.””
The room froze.
Vanessa immediately stepped forward.
“Thomas, you need to leave.””
I turned toward her.
The fear in her voice was impossible to miss.
Thomas looked at her.
“Still giving orders, Vanessa?””
She didn’t respond.
I stepped between them.
“Someone better start explaining.””
Thomas looked at the photograph in Sofia’s hand.
Then at the broken memory box.
His face changed.
“She finally found it.””
My heart tightened.
“Found what?””
Thomas looked at me.
“The truth Elena tried to protect.””
Vanessa shook her head.
“Don’t listen to him.””
I looked at her.
“Why?””
She had no answer.
Thomas walked closer.
“Because if Daniel learns everything, Vanessa loses everything.””
The guests began whispering louder.
I looked around.
“Everyone leaves.””
Nobody argued.
Within minutes, the ballroom emptied.
Only Sofia, Marco, Thomas, Vanessa, and I remained.
I picked up the photograph.
“Start talking.””
Thomas took a deep breath.
“Six years ago, Elena discovered Vanessa wasn’t the person she claimed to be.””
Vanessa crossed her arms.
“That’s a lie.””
Thomas ignored her.
“She found documents proving Vanessa had been hiding her real connection to your company.””
I frowned.
“What connection?””
Thomas looked at me.
“She wasn’t just a friend.””
Vanessa’s face tightened.
“She was investigating something.””
The words came out before she could stop them.
Everyone looked at her.
I slowly turned.
“Investigating?””
Vanessa realized her mistake.
Thomas gave a bitter smile.
“Exactly.””
I felt like the floor disappeared beneath me.
“My wife was investigating you?””
Thomas nodded.
“Elena didn’t trust easily. But she trusted her instincts.””
I looked at the photograph again.
Elena and Vanessa.
Standing together.
Smiling.
How could my wife have been close to someone she suspected?
“What did Elena find?””
Thomas looked at Sofia.
Then lowered his voice.
“She found out Vanessa had been manipulating people around her for years.””
Vanessa stepped forward.
“That’s enough.””
“No,” I said.
My voice surprised even me.
“It’s not enough.””
Vanessa stared at me.
“Daniel, you’re letting a grieving man rewrite history.””
I looked at Thomas.
Then back at her.
“Then tell me your version.””
Silence.
That silence was her answer.
Thomas reached into his coat pocket.
He pulled out a small key.
“I found this hidden in Elena’s belongings.””
My eyes narrowed.
“What does it open?””
Thomas looked toward Sofia.
“Something your wife wanted her daughter to have when she was old enough.””
Sofia stepped closer.
“Mommy left something for me?””
Thomas nodded.
“She did.””
Sofia’s eyes filled with tears.
“Why didn’t anyone tell me?””
Nobody answered.
Because the truth was painful.
Someone had hidden it.
I looked at Vanessa.
And for the first time, I wondered how much of Sofia’s life had been controlled.
Thomas placed the key on the table.
“But before you open anything, Daniel…”
He paused.
“You need to know what happened the night Elena disappeared.””
My entire body went still.
Because for six years, everyone told me the same story.
A tragic accident.
Bad weather.
A road nobody could save her from.
But Thomas looked like a man carrying a secret too heavy to hold.
“What are you saying?””
He looked directly at me.
“Elena didn’t disappear by accident.””
Sofia grabbed my hand.
I felt her trembling.
Thomas continued.
“She was trying to escape someone.””
The room went silent.
I looked at Vanessa.
She looked away.
And that was when I knew.
There was a piece of the story nobody had told me.
Thomas reached into his pocket again.
This time, he pulled out a small envelope.
“Elena wrote this the night before she vanished.””
My heart stopped.
“Why didn’t I get it?””
May you like
Thomas looked at Vanessa.
“Because she made sure you never saw it.””
