Chapter 7: The Truth My Father Buried
For six years, I believed my father was the person who helped me survive losing Elena.
He was the man who sat beside me at the funeral.
The man who told me to stay strong for Sofia.
The man who placed a hand on my shoulder and said, “Some things happen that we will never understand.””
Now he stood in my ballroom admitting he knew exactly what happened.
And somehow…
he had been silent.
I stared at Richard Whitmore.
My own father.
The man who taught me everything about loyalty.
“What did you do?””
My voice sounded different.
Colder.
Richard looked at Sofia.
Then away.
“I never wanted Elena to get hurt.””
That wasn’t an answer.
I stepped forward.
“Then why did she disappear?””
The room was silent.
Vanessa looked nervous.
Marco looked down.
Thomas looked like he had been waiting years for this moment.
Richard sighed.
“Because Elena found something she wasn’t supposed to find.””
I felt my hands tighten.
“What?””
He looked at the broken memory box.
“The company records.””
I frowned.
“What company records?””
Richard sat down slowly.
For the first time in my life, he looked old.
Not powerful.
Not untouchable.
Just tired.
“Years ago, before you took over the company, there were financial problems.””
I stared at him.
“My company was built on your reputation.””
“I know.””
“Then tell me the truth.””
Richard looked at me.
“Elena discovered that money was being moved without your knowledge.””
The words hit me.
“What are you saying?””
“I’m saying someone inside the company was stealing.””
I looked at Vanessa.
Then Marco.
Then my father.
“Who?””
Richard didn’t answer.
That silence told me everything.
“You.””
His face changed.
“I made mistakes.””
I laughed quietly.
Mistakes.
That was the word people used when they wanted to make terrible choices sound smaller.
“You let me believe my wife died because of an accident.””
Richard lowered his eyes.
“I was trying to protect you.””
“No.””
I shook my head.
“You were protecting yourself.””
Sofia walked closer.
“Daddy?””
I immediately softened.
I knelt beside her.
“It’s okay.””
But it wasn’t.
Nothing was okay.
She looked at Richard.
“Did Grandpa hurt Mommy?””
Nobody spoke.
And that question broke something inside the room.
Richard looked away.
A grandfather couldn’t even answer his granddaughter.
Thomas stepped forward.
“Tell him everything.””
Richard looked at him.
“You have no right.””
Thomas’s expression hardened.
“I have every right. Elena was my sister.””
Richard closed his eyes.
Then he finally spoke.
“I found out Vanessa was involved.””
My heart stopped.
“You knew?””
“Yes.””
“And you still let her into my house?””
“I thought I could control it.””
The anger inside me became almost impossible to contain.
“You thought?””
Richard looked at me.
“I thought if I kept everyone close, I could fix it.””
“You didn’t fix anything.””
My voice echoed through the ballroom.
“You destroyed my family.””
Vanessa suddenly spoke.
“Daniel, listen to me.””
I turned.
“No.””
She froze.
“I listened for six years.””
I picked up Elena’s letter.
“Now you listen.””
I opened the page again.
There was one sentence I hadn’t noticed before.
A sentence written at the bottom.
My eyes widened.
“What is it?””
Thomas asked.
I read it aloud.
“If Richard tells you he was protecting you, remember this: he was protecting the secret.””
Everyone went silent.
My father’s face changed.
Because Elena had known.
She knew exactly how he would explain himself.
I looked at him.
“She knew you would say that.””
Richard whispered:
“She was always smarter than everyone.””
Then Marco suddenly moved toward the window.
“Boss.””
I looked at him.
“What?””
He pointed outside.
A black vehicle had stopped near the entrance.
Someone stepped out.
Someone carrying a box.
My security team moved immediately.
But Marco stopped them.
“Wait.””
I looked confused.
“Why?””
Marco stared at the person approaching.
“Because that’s the person Elena trusted after me.””
The ballroom doors opened.
A woman walked inside.
She looked at me.
Then at Sofia.
Her eyes filled with tears.
“I’m sorry I waited this long.””
I stepped forward.
“Who are you?””
She held a small envelope.
“My name is Claire Bennett.””
May you like
A pause.
“And I was the last person who saw your wife alive.””
