Chapter 8: The Witness Elena Left Behind
The room went completely silent.
I looked at Claire Bennett.
The name meant nothing to me.
But the sentence she had just spoken meant everything.
The last person who saw Elena alive.
My entire body went cold.
“You knew my wife?””
Claire nodded.
“I did.””
“When?””
She looked down.
“The night she disappeared.””
Sofia held onto my jacket.
I looked at her.
Then at Claire.
“Why are you here now?””
Claire’s eyes moved toward Vanessa.
“Because I found out the truth was finally coming out.””
Vanessa immediately stepped forward.
“This woman is lying.””
Claire looked at her.
A small, sad smile appeared.
“You said the same thing six years ago.””
That was enough.
I turned toward Vanessa.
“What does that mean?””
Vanessa said nothing.
Claire opened the box she carried.
Inside were several old items.
A watch.
A notebook.
A photograph.
And another envelope.
“I kept these because Elena asked me to.””
My heart raced.
“Why didn’t you give them to me?””
Claire looked ashamed.
“Because I was afraid.””
“Of who?””
She didn’t answer.
She didn’t need to.
Everyone knew.
I walked toward her.
“What happened that night?””
Claire took a deep breath.
“Elena called me at midnight.””
I listened carefully.
“She sounded scared.””
“What did she say?””
Claire closed her eyes.
“She said, ‘If anything happens to me, Daniel needs to know the truth.’”
My chest tightened.
“What truth?””
Claire looked at Richard.
Then Vanessa.
“She found out that Vanessa wasn’t trying to replace her.””
I frowned.
“Then what was she trying to do?””
Claire looked at me.
“She was trying to steal everything Elena built.””
The room went still.
Vanessa laughed nervously.
“This is ridiculous.””
Claire ignored her.
“Elena discovered Vanessa had been collecting information for years.””
“What information?””
“About your family. Your company. Your assets.””
I looked at Vanessa.
“You planned this?””
She shook her head.
“No.””
But her voice lacked confidence.
Claire continued.
“Elena confronted her.””
“When?””
“The night before she disappeared.””
My mind replayed every memory.
Every moment I thought was normal.
Every conversation I ignored.
Claire pulled out the notebook.
“Elena wrote down everything.””
I reached for it.
But Claire held it back.
“She wanted Sofia to have this when she was older.””
I looked at my daughter.
“She knew?””
Claire nodded.
“She loved Sofia more than anything.””
Sofia’s eyes filled with tears.
“Mommy remembered me?””
Claire immediately knelt down.
“Oh sweetheart.””
She smiled sadly.
“Your mommy talked about you every time I saw her.””
Sofia wiped her face.
“She did?””
“She said you were the reason she kept fighting.””
I looked away.
Because hearing those words hurt.
But they also healed something.
Elena never left Sofia.
She had been trying to protect her.
Claire handed me the notebook.
The first page contained a message.
Daniel.
If you found this, please believe one thing.
I never stopped fighting for us.
I turned the page.
There were names.
Dates.
Details.
And then I saw something that made my heart stop.
A photo of Vanessa.
But not with Elena.
With someone else.
Someone I recognized.
Someone who had no reason to be connected to this.
I looked at Claire.
“Who is this?””
Her face changed.
“You know him?””
I nodded.
“He works with my father.””
Claire whispered:
“That’s impossible.””
“Why?””
“Because Elena discovered he wasn’t working for your father.””
I stared at the picture.
“Then who was he working for?””
Claire looked toward Vanessa.
And Vanessa finally lost her calm.
“Stop.””
Everyone turned.
Her voice shook.
“Stop digging into things you don’t understand.””
I stepped closer.
“No.””
I held up Elena’s notebook.
“You spent six years trying to erase her.””
Vanessa’s eyes filled with anger.
“You have no idea what Elena was capable of.””
The words shocked me.
Because they weren’t the words of someone defending herself.
They were the words of someone afraid.
Claire looked at me.
“Daniel…”
She pointed to the last page of the notebook.
“There’s one more thing Elena wanted you to see.””
I opened it.
Only one sentence was written.
And when I read it, my entire world changed.
“Vanessa was never the person I was afraid of.””
I looked up.
“What does that mean?””
Claire whispered:
“Because Elena discovered someone much closer was controlling everything.””
My eyes slowly moved across the room.
May you like
And stopped.
On the person I trusted most.
