Chapter 8: The Brother I Buried

Some wounds never heal.

They simply wait.

The moment Ethan said Daniel's name, I felt twenty years disappear.

My brother.

My younger brother.

The person I shared my childhood with.

The person who stood beside me when our parents died.

The person I trusted more than anyone.

“No,” I whispered.

Ethan looked at me.

“Dad?””

I shook my head.

“Daniel would never do that.””

Michael gave a bitter laugh.

“That's exactly why he was useful.””

I turned toward him.

“Don't.””

“You trusted him.””

“Yes.””

“And that's why he got close.””

My hands curled into fists.

Daniel wasn't just family.

He was the last person I expected to betray me.

Emma looked at the letter.

“Can we read it?””

Ethan handed it to her.

She read quietly.

Then she looked up.

“She says Daniel helped Michael access company records.””

My stomach tightened.

“No.””

“Dad.””

I shook my head.

“There must be another explanation.””

Ethan stared at me.

“Why are you defending him?””

Because I remembered.

Because loyalty was not something I abandoned easily.

Because Daniel had been there during the hardest years of my life.

But then I remembered something else.

The money.

The missing documents.

The strange questions he asked after my wife died.

“Dad?””

I sat down.

“I don't know.””

That was the truth.

For the first time in decades, I didn't know.

My phone buzzed.

Another message.

This time from a number I recognized.

Daniel.

*We need to talk before they tell you lies about me.*

Ethan saw it.

“Answer him.””

I hesitated.

Emma shook her head.

“Put it on speaker.””

I called.

It rang twice.

Then Daniel answered.

“Richard.””

His voice sounded tired.

Not angry.

Tired.

“You found the letter.””

I felt cold.

“How do you know about the letter?””

Silence.

Then:

“Because I helped your wife write it.””

Nobody moved.

“What?””

Daniel sighed.

“She knew she was in danger.””

My grip tightened around the phone.

“You knew?””

“Yes.””

“And you didn't tell me?””

“I was trying to protect you.””

The same excuse.

The same words everyone used.

Protect.

Protect.

Protect.

But secrets never protected families.

They destroyed them slowly.

“You let me believe I lost my wife because of bad luck.””

Daniel's voice softened.

“Richard, listen to me.””

“No.””

My voice cracked.

“You listen.””

The anger I had buried for years finally came out.

“You watched me bury my wife. You watched me raise Ethan alone. You watched me blame myself.””

“I know.””

“And you said nothing.””

“I couldn't.””

“Why?””

Silence.

Then he said:

“Because I was afraid.””

I laughed.

“You?””

“Yes.””

The honesty shocked me.

Daniel continued.

“Michael wasn't alone.””

Ethan leaned closer.

“Who else?””

Daniel didn't answer.

“Who else?””

Finally:

“Sophia's father.””

The room went quiet.

I felt the blood leave my face.

“What?””

Daniel continued.

“Before Sophia married Ethan, her father had been investigating you.””

“Why?””

“Because he believed you destroyed Michael's life.””

Michael looked away.

I understood.

A revenge plan.

Twenty years in the making.

But there was still one question.

“Why marry Ethan?””

Daniel answered quietly.

“Because Ethan was the easiest way to get close to you.””

Ethan stepped back.

Like he had been punched.

“No.””

Daniel said:

“I'm sorry.””

“No.””

Ethan shook his head.

“My marriage was fake?””

Nobody answered.

Because sometimes silence is the cruelest truth.

Then Daniel said something that changed everything.

“Richard, you need to leave that house.””

I frowned.

“What?””

“Right now.””

“Why?””

His voice became urgent.

“Because Sophia didn't just forge your signature.””

A terrible feeling entered my chest.

“What did she do?””

Daniel whispered:

“She changed your legal documents.””

Emma looked confused.

“Which documents?””

Daniel answered:

“Your will.””

The room went silent.

Ethan looked at me.

“My father's will?””

Daniel continued.

“She didn't want control over your money.””

A pause.

“She wanted control over who inherited everything after you died.””

My phone slipped slightly in my hand.

Because suddenly I understood.

Sophia wasn't trying to remove me from my home.

She was trying to make sure I never had a chance to change anything.

Then Daniel said:

“Richard... there is one more thing.””

“What?””

“I saw the new will.””

My heart pounded.

“Whose name was on it?””

Daniel hesitated.

Then:

“Ethan's.””

My son looked shocked.

“Mine?””

Daniel's voice dropped.

“But there was one condition.””

I felt something was wrong.

“What condition?””

Daniel answered:

“If Richard dies unexpectedly, Ethan inherits everything.””

Nobody spoke.

Because the trap was finally visible.

May you like

Sophia didn't need Ethan to hate me forever.

She only needed him to doubt me long enough.
