Chapter 13: The Signature That Changed Everything

I stared at the screen until the image blurred.

Two signatures.

My wife's.

Mine.

Both sitting at the bottom of a document I had never seen.

For twenty years, I believed I knew every painful detail of that chapter of my life.

I was wrong.

The past wasn't buried.

It had been waiting.

“Play it again,” I whispered.

Nobody moved.

Ethan pressed the button.

The video restarted.

My wife was lying in the hospital bed.

She looked tired.

But she wasn't defeated.

That was what I noticed first.

She looked scared.

Not broken.

Sophia's father, Victor Bennett, sat beside her.

The same man who had spent years pretending to be a victim.

The same man who had convinced his daughter that I was the enemy.

“If you don't sign this,” Victor said, “Richard loses everything.””

My wife's voice trembled.

“You said you would leave my family alone.””

Victor smiled.

A cold smile.

“I said I would consider it.””

My hands tightened.

Ethan stared at the screen.

“He threatened Mom.””

I nodded slowly.

“Yes.””

The video continued.

My wife looked toward the camera.

For a second, I felt like she was looking directly at me.

“Richard will never forgive himself if something happens to Ethan.””

Victor leaned closer.

“Then convince him.””

My wife's face changed.

“What?””

“Make him believe the company failed because of him.””

She shook her head.

“No.””

Victor stood.

“You have one choice.””

The video ended.

Nobody spoke.

Then Ethan whispered:

“He was manipulating her.””

I looked at the frozen image.

“Yes.””

Emma covered her mouth.

“But why were your signatures there?””

That was the question.

The one that mattered.

Sophia’s message arrived immediately.

*The next file explains everything.*

A second attachment appeared.

A scanned document.

I opened it.

The title made my heart stop.

*Temporary Transfer Agreement.*

I read the first line.

Then the second.

Then I understood.

My wife hadn't betrayed me.

She had protected me.

The document wasn't giving Victor control.

It was a trap.

A legal agreement designed to expose him if he tried to use it.

“She knew,” I whispered.

Ethan looked at me.

“Mom knew what?””

“She knew Victor would try to steal the company.””

I pointed at the document.

“This wasn't a transfer.””

Emma leaned closer.

“It was evidence.””

I nodded.

My wife had spent her final days creating a plan.

A plan I had never known about.

Because she knew if she told me, I would act emotionally.

I would confront Victor.

And he would destroy everything.

“She trusted Daniel with the evidence,” I said.

Everyone looked at Daniel.

He nodded.

“She told me to hide it until the right moment.””

Ethan looked angry.

“Then why didn't you tell Dad?””

Daniel looked at him.

“Because your mother believed the danger would disappear.””

“But it didn't.””

“No.””

Daniel looked down.

“It got passed to the next generation.””

My phone rang.

Sophia.

This time, I answered.

Nobody spoke first.

Then she said:

“I know you saw it.””

“Yes.””

Silence.

“I'm sorry.””

The apology sounded different.

Not rehearsed.

Not fake.

Just broken.

“Why didn't you tell Ethan the truth earlier?””

Her voice shook.

“Because I didn't know the truth earlier.””

I frowned.

“What do you mean?””

“My father only showed me pieces.””

She continued.

“He raised me to believe your family destroyed ours.””

Ethan closed his eyes.

“And you believed him.””

“Yes.””

A pause.

“Until I found my mother's diary.””

My breath caught.

“Your mother knew?””

“Yes.””

Sophia whispered:

“She wrote that your wife was the only person who tried to save her.””

Nobody moved.

The enemy we thought we understood was becoming more complicated.

“What happened to Victor?”” I asked.

Sophia was silent.

Then:

“He knows I turned against him.””

A chill ran through me.

“How?””

“He found out I gave you the files.””

“Where are you?””

No answer.

“Sophia?””

Then a sound.

A door closing.

Her breathing changed.

“He's here.””

My body went cold.

“Who?””

Her voice became a whisper.

“My father.””

The call cut.

Ethan stood immediately.

“We have to find her.””

I looked at my son.

For the first time in years, we weren't standing on opposite sides.

We were fighting together.

But before we could move, my phone received one final message.

A picture.

Sophia sitting in a dark room.

And behind her...

Victor Bennett.

Holding a gun.

*Come alone, Richard. Or your family loses another person.*
