Chapter 3: The Name Hidden on the Paper

That night, nobody slept.

Not because we were trying to solve a mystery.

Because we were afraid of the answer.

Ethan sat across from me at the kitchen table.

The same table where I had helped him with homework thirty years earlier.

Now neither of us knew what to say.

Finally, he spoke.

“Dad... why didn't you tell me about the missing money?””

I looked down at my coffee.

Because I didn't know how to tell my son that I suspected the woman he loved.

Because a father never wants to believe his child chose the wrong person.

“I didn't want to accuse her without proof.””

Ethan rubbed his hands over his face.

“I hit you.””

The words came out like they hurt him.

“I hit you because I believed her.””

I looked at my son.

“You were angry.””

“No.””

He shook his head.

“I was cruel.””

The kitchen became quiet.

Then Emma placed the printed document on the table.

“We need to understand this before we do anything.””

She opened her laptop.

“Where did you sign this?””

I stared at the paper.

“I didn't.””

“Dad, look carefully.””

I did.

The signature was mine.

The handwriting looked almost perfect.

Almost.

Then I noticed something.

The final letter in my name.

It curved differently.

A tiny detail nobody else would notice.

But I had written my own signature for seventy-five years.

That wasn't my hand.

“That is fake,” I whispered.

Ethan looked up.

“Are you sure?””

I nodded.

“I know my own signature.””

Emma leaned back.

“So Sophia forged your signature.””

The word hung in the air.

Forged.

My son looked sick.

But before he could answer, my phone rang.

Unknown number.

I answered.

“Hello?””

A woman's voice spoke softly.

“Mr. Richard Miller?””

“Yes.””

“My name is Linda. I work at your bank.””

I sat up.

“What is this about?””

There was a pause.

Then she lowered her voice.

“Sir, I need to ask you something important.””

“What?””

“Did you recently authorize your daughter-in-law Sophia Bennett to access your accounts?””

I looked at Ethan.

He looked at me.

“No,” I said.

“I did not.””

Another pause.

Then Linda said something that made the room freeze.

“Mr. Miller... someone using your identity already transferred control of your accounts.””

My fingers tightened around the phone.

“When?””

“Three weeks ago.””

The exact same week.

Emma stood up.

“What did she say?””

I put the call on speaker.

Linda continued.

“There is one more thing, sir.””

“What?””

“We found another name attached to the authorization documents.””

My heart started pounding.

“Whose name?””

Linda hesitated.

Then she answered.

“The second person listed as beneficiary is not Sophia Bennett.””

Ethan frowned.

“Then who?””

Linda's voice became quieter.

“It's a man named...””

The call suddenly cut out.

I looked at the screen.

No signal.

Then a message appeared.

Unknown number.

One sentence.

*STOP LOOKING, OR YOUR SON WILL LEARN WHAT YOU DID TWENTY YEARS AGO.*

Ethan read it.

His face changed.

Because he understood something I didn't.

“What does that mean?”” I asked.

He didn't answer.

“Ethan?””

My son slowly looked at me.

May you like

And whispered:

“Dad... what happened twenty years ago?””
