Chapter 5: The Man Who Knew My Past
Michael Carter looked older.
But some people carry the same darkness in their eyes no matter how many years pass.
When I opened the door, he smiled.
Not warmly.
Not kindly.
Like someone who had been waiting for this moment.
“Richard.””
I didn't move.
“Michael.””
Behind me, Ethan whispered:
“You know him?””
I kept my eyes on the man standing outside.
“Yes.””
Michael stepped inside without being invited.
That was always his way.
He entered places like he owned them.
“Twenty years,” he said.
“That's a long time to pretend nothing happened.””
Emma immediately stepped forward.
“Who are you?””
Michael looked at her.
“I'm the reason your father isn't the man you think he is.””
Ethan stiffened.
“Get out.””
Michael laughed.
“Still protecting him?””
He looked at me.
“Interesting.””
I felt my anger rising.
“Why are you here?””
Michael reached into his coat.
Ethan moved closer.
“Dad.””
But Michael only pulled out a folder.
He placed it on the table.
“Because your daughter-in-law asked me to finish something she started.””
Everyone froze.
“Sophia knows you?”” Emma asked.
Michael smiled.
“She contacted me six months ago.””
Ethan's face went pale.
“Why?””
“To find out what your father was hiding.””
I stared at the folder.
“What did you tell her?””
Michael leaned back.
“The truth.””
My hand tightened.
“You don't know the truth.””
He smiled.
“I was there.””
The words hit harder than I expected.
Ethan looked at me.
“Dad?””
I closed my eyes.
Because I knew this day would come.
I just never expected it to come like this.
Michael opened the folder.
Inside were old documents.
Newspaper clippings.
Photos.
And one document I recognized immediately.
A transfer agreement.
Emma picked it up.
“What is this?””
Michael answered.
“Twenty years ago, Richard stole money from his own son.””
Ethan looked at me.
“What?””
I grabbed the paper.
“That isn't what happened.””
Michael laughed.
“Of course you would say that.””
Ethan's voice became louder.
“Dad?””
I looked at my son.
“Listen to me.””
But Michael interrupted.
“Your father wants you to believe he saved you.””
He pointed at the document.
“But the truth is, he took control of your company.””
Emma looked confused.
“Why?””
Michael smiled.
“Because Richard wanted power.””
I slammed the folder shut.
“Enough.””
Everyone became silent.
I looked at Michael.
“You always did love twisting the truth.””
He stepped closer.
“Then tell them.””
I said nothing.
Because the truth was complicated.
And complicated truths are easy to destroy.
Ethan stared at me.
“Dad, what happened?””
I looked at him.
The little boy I used to carry on my shoulders.
The man who had just hit me.
The son I still loved.
“I did take control of the company.””
His face changed.
“But not for the reason he said.””
Michael smiled.
“Go ahead, Richard.””
“Tell them why.””
I looked down.
“Because you were going to lose everything.””
Ethan froze.
“What?””
“Your business partner was stealing from you.””
Michael's smile disappeared.
I continued.
“I found proof. Your partner had drained the accounts and left you with the debt.””
Ethan stared.
“That can't be true.””
“It is.””
I pointed at Michael.
“Because he was your partner.””
The room went silent.
Michael's expression changed.
Just for a second.
But I saw it.
Fear.
Ethan looked at him.
“You?””
Michael didn't answer.
Emma grabbed the old documents.
“Dad, what is this?””
I took a deep breath.
“Twenty years ago, I exposed Michael's fraud.””
Michael stepped forward.
“And ruined my life.””
“No,” I said.
“You ruined your own life.””
He laughed.
“You think you won?””
Then he looked at Ethan.
“You still don't know the whole story.””
Ethan frowned.
“What story?””
Michael smiled.
“The reason your father never told you what really happened.””
My heart sank.
Because I knew what was coming.
Michael pointed at the folder.
“Ask him why your mother died with a secret.””
Ethan stopped breathing.
Emma looked at me.
“Mom?””
I felt the room spinning.
May you like
Because Michael had just opened the one door I had kept locked for twenty years.
And behind that door was the truth I had promised my wife I would never reveal.
