Chapter 2: The Recording She Never Expected

Emma grabbed the tablet from the security system drawer.

“Dad, when did this happen?””

“About five minutes ago.””

Her fingers moved quickly.

Ethan stood beside her, silent.

Sophia kept shaking her head.

“This is ridiculous. A camera in the living room? That's an invasion of privacy.””

Emma didn't look up.

“Why are you worried about the camera if it proves you're telling the truth?””

Sophia's mouth opened.

No words came out.

That was the first time Ethan noticed.

His wife wasn't asking to clear her name.

She was asking to destroy the evidence.

The video loaded.

Everyone watched the screen.

There I was.

Standing exactly where I had been.

Several feet away from Sophia.

No touching.

No grabbing.

No attack.

Then the footage showed what happened before Ethan arrived.

Sophia walked into the room alone.

She looked around.

She checked the hallway.

Then she smiled.

The room became colder.

Even Ethan looked confused.

On the screen, Sophia grabbed her blouse.

Rip.

Emma stopped the video.

“Ethan... are you seeing this?””

My son didn't answer.

Sophia stepped forward.

“Turn it off.””

Emma looked at her.

“Why?””

“Because you have no right to record me.””

“No,” Emma said calmly.

“You have no right to accuse Dad of something he didn't do.””

Sophia's face hardened.

“You always hated me.””

Emma laughed quietly.

“No. I hated watching you manipulate him.””

Ethan looked between them.

“Enough.””

His voice was weak.

Not angry.

Confused.

“Play the rest.””

Sophia grabbed his arm.

“Ethan, don't do this.””

He looked at her.

“Why?””

That one word changed everything.

Because for the first time, Ethan wasn't defending her.

He was questioning her.

Emma pressed play.

The video continued.

Sophia pulled her own hair.

Then she screamed.

Then she waited.

Seconds later, Ethan entered.

And everyone saw the truth.

I watched my son's face collapse.

He sat down slowly.

“Dad...””

I didn't answer.

What could I say?

That I was hurt?

That I was disappointed?

That the person who knew me best had believed the worst about me?

Before I could speak, Emma paused the video again.

“Wait.””

She rewound.

“There's something before this.””

Sophia immediately moved toward her.

“Emma, stop.””

But Emma had already pressed play.

This time, the footage showed Sophia walking into my living room twenty minutes earlier.

She was holding her phone.

She wasn't crying.

She wasn't scared.

She was making a call.

Her voice filled the room.

“Don't worry. Ethan will believe me.””

Everyone froze.

Sophia looked at the screen.

“No.””

The recording continued.

“Once the old man is out, we can finally get him to sign everything.””

Ethan stood up.

“Sign what?””

Sophia said nothing.

The video showed her holding a folder.

She opened it.

A document appeared.

Emma zoomed in.

The words became clear.

POWER OF ATTORNEY.

My stomach dropped.

I knew exactly what that meant.

Someone with power of attorney could control my finances.

My accounts.

My property.

My decisions.

Ethan turned toward his wife.

“What is this?””

Sophia crossed her arms.

“It isn't what you think.””

Emma looked at her.

“Then explain it.””

Sophia stayed silent.

That silence said more than any confession.

I reached into my pocket and pulled out my phone.

“I found out last month that money was missing from my account.””

Ethan looked at me.

“How much?””

“Almost twenty thousand dollars.””

His face changed.

“Why didn't you tell me?””

I looked at him.

“Because I wanted to believe there was another explanation.””

Sophia suddenly became angry.

“You're accusing me?””

“No,” I said quietly.

“I was hoping I was wrong.””

The room went silent.

Then Emma zoomed in on the document again.

Her expression changed.

“Dad...””

I looked at her.

“What?””

She swallowed.

“Your signature.””

My heart stopped.

The signature at the bottom of the page looked exactly like mine.

But I had never signed that document.

Ethan stepped closer to the screen.

“That's impossible.””

Emma shook her head.

“No.””

She pointed at the date.

“This was signed three weeks ago.””

I stared at the paper.

Three weeks ago.

The same week Sophia started insisting that I needed help managing my finances.

The same week she brought me documents and told me they were "just medical forms.""

Then Sophia quietly picked up her purse.

Emma noticed.

“Where are you going?””

Sophia smiled.

A cold, empty smile.

“I think I've stayed long enough.””

Ethan blocked the doorway.

“No.””

She looked at him.

“You don't know what you're doing.””

And then she said something that made my blood run cold.

“Ask your father who he really signed those papers for.””

Everyone turned toward me.

May you like

Because suddenly, Sophia wasn't afraid anymore.

She knew something we didn't.
