Chapter 4: The Secret My Son Buried

For twenty years, I had carried a secret that I thought was protecting my family.

I never imagined that secret would become a weapon used against me.

The kitchen felt smaller as Ethan stared at me.

His expression wasn't angry.

That almost made it worse.

He looked afraid.

“Dad,” he said quietly, “you need to tell me the truth.””

I looked at Emma.

Then back at my son.

“What are you talking about?””

Ethan stood up and walked toward the window.

“When I was twenty-seven, something happened.””

My heart tightened.

Twenty years ago.

The words from the message kept repeating in my head.

*STOP LOOKING, OR YOUR SON WILL LEARN WHAT YOU DID TWENTY YEARS AGO.*

I had spent two decades trying to forget that night.

Not because I was ashamed.

Because I was trying to protect Ethan.

“Son,” I said slowly, “whatever Sophia told you—”

“It wasn't Sophia.””

He turned around.

“It was me.””

The room went silent.

Emma frowned.

“Ethan, what are you saying?””

My son looked down.

“Twenty years ago, I made a mistake.””

I waited.

I had learned a long time ago that silence often revealed more than questions.

“I was drowning in debt,” Ethan admitted.

I stared at him.

“What debt?””

He swallowed.

“Business debt.””

The memory came back instantly.

The phone calls.

The late nights.

The way Ethan avoided my eyes.

The day he came to me and asked for help.

“I thought you told me it was because your company needed money.””

“It did,” he said.

“But not just that.””

Emma stepped closer.

“What happened?””

Ethan sat back down.

“I borrowed money from the wrong people.””

My stomach dropped.

“Who?””

“I don't know if they're still around.””

His hands trembled.

“But twenty years ago, I owed almost $120,000.””

I looked at my son.

The boy I raised.

The man sitting in front of me.

“Why didn't you tell me?””

He laughed bitterly.

“Because I was embarrassed.””

I shook my head.

“You should have trusted me.””

“I know.””

His voice cracked.

“But I was scared you would see me differently.””

I looked away.

Because that was the part that hurt.

My son had believed my disappointment was worse than losing everything.

“You remember the money I gave you for the house?”” I asked.

He nodded.

“Yes.””

“That wasn't just a gift.””

His eyes lifted.

“I know.””

“I paid off your debt.””

Ethan closed his eyes.

“I know.””

Emma looked between us.

“Wait. You knew?””

Ethan nodded.

“Dad found out.””

I remembered that day.

I remembered walking into Ethan's apartment and seeing the letters on his table.

Collections.

Threats.

Warnings.

My son had been hiding everything.

So I did what any father would do.

I saved him.

But now I wondered if saving him had allowed him to keep running from his mistakes.

“I didn't tell you because I wanted you to have a fresh start,” I said.

Ethan looked at me.

“And now Sophia is using it against us.””

The phone message suddenly made sense.

Someone knew about the past.

Someone wanted Ethan afraid.

Emma picked up the document again.

“There's something else.””

She pointed at the power of attorney.

“The beneficiary name was hidden before the call ended.””

Ethan looked nervous.

“Maybe we should stop digging.””

Emma stared at him.

“Why?””

He didn't answer.

“Ethan?””

My son looked toward the hallway.

Then whispered:

“Because I know who might be behind this.””

My chest tightened.

“Who?””

Before he could respond, there was a knock at the door.

Three slow knocks.

Nobody moved.

The clock on the wall ticked loudly.

Knock.

Knock.

Knock.

Emma looked at me.

“Are we expecting someone?””

I shook my head.

Ethan walked toward the door.

“Don't.””

My voice stopped him.

Something about that moment felt wrong.

Not dangerous.

Familiar.

Like someone from my past had finally come back.

The knock came again.

Ethan looked through the window beside the door.

His face changed.

“Dad...””

“What?””

He stepped away.

“There's someone here who says he knows you.””

I stood up slowly.

“Who?””

Ethan looked at me.

“He says his name is Michael Carter.””

My blood turned cold.

I hadn't heard that name in twenty years.

Not since the night everything changed.

Because Michael Carter wasn't just someone from my past.

May you like

He was the one person who knew exactly what I had done.

And exactly what I had hidden from my son.
