Chapter 14: The Last Lie

I had spent my entire life believing courage meant standing alone.

I was wrong.

Real courage was admitting you needed people.

And that night, I needed my family.

“I’m going alone,” I said.

Three voices answered at once.

“No.””

Ethan stepped forward.

“Not happening.””

Emma shook her head.

“Dad, you spent your whole life protecting us. Let us protect you.””

Daniel looked at me.

“She planned this.””

I stared at him.

“Who?””

“Victor.””

Michael, who had been silent for several minutes, finally spoke.

“He always liked control.””

Everyone turned.

Michael looked at the floor.

“I know where he would take her.””

Ethan looked suspicious.

“Why should we trust you?””

Michael accepted the question.

“You shouldn't.””

Then he looked at me.

“But I owe your father the truth.””

He took out his phone.

“I tracked Victor after he disappeared.””

My eyes narrowed.

“You were following him?””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

“Because I knew he would come after me too.””

That was the first honest answer Michael had given.

No excuses.

No manipulation.

Just fear.

An hour later, we arrived at an abandoned warehouse outside the city.

The place looked exactly like the kind of place where old secrets went to die.

Daniel stopped the car.

“He's inside.””

I looked at Ethan.

“Stay back.””

He shook his head.

“No.””

“Ethan.””

He looked at me.

“I already failed you once.””

His voice broke.

“I won't do it again.””

Those words hurt more than any apology.

Because I knew he meant them.

We entered through the side door.

The warehouse was silent.

Too silent.

Then we heard a voice.

“Richard.””

Victor stepped out from the shadows.

Sophia was sitting behind him.

Her hands were tied.

But she was awake.

“You came.””

I stared at him.

“You threatened my family.””

Victor smiled.

“Your family was already destroyed.””

Ethan moved forward.

“You used my wife.””

Victor looked at him.

“I gave her purpose.””

Sophia closed her eyes.

“You lied to me.””

Victor laughed.

“I taught you the truth.””

“No.””

Her voice became stronger.

“You taught me hate.””

That seemed to anger him.

“You ungrateful—”

“Enough.””

I stepped forward.

“You spent twenty years blaming me.””

Victor looked at me.

“Because you took everything.””

“No.””

I shook my head.

“You lost everything because you chose revenge over your own daughter.””

His face changed.

Only slightly.

But enough.

“You think you know what happened?””

Victor pulled out a folder.

“You don't.””

He threw it toward me.

“Your wife wasn't protecting you.””

I picked it up.

Inside was a medical report.

My wife's.

My hands trembled.

Victor smiled.

“She knew she was dying.””

Ethan froze.

“What?””

Victor continued.

“She knew her condition was serious.””

I looked at the report.

A diagnosis.

A treatment.

A timeline.

My wife had known.

She knew she didn't have much time.

“She never told me.””

Victor smiled.

“Exactly.””

But then Sophia spoke.

“She didn't tell him because she wanted him to keep living.””

Everyone looked at her.

She continued:

“My mother wrote that in her diary.””

Victor's face changed.

Because that was the one thing he couldn't control.

The truth.

Sophia looked at me.

“Your wife loved you.””

I looked at Victor.

“You built everything on a lie.””

He stepped backward.

“No.””

“Yes.””

Daniel walked forward.

“And now everyone knows.””

Victor looked around.

The people he had manipulated.

The people he had used.

All standing together.

Then he did something unexpected.

He laughed.

“You think this is over?””

He looked directly at Ethan.

“Ask your father why he never told you about your real father.””

The world stopped.

Ethan looked at me.

“What?””

I felt my heart drop.

Because there was one secret left.

May you like

One I had buried deeper than all the others.

And Victor knew.
