Chapter 6: The Promise I Made to My Wife

There are moments when time doesn't move forward.

It moves backward.

The second Michael mentioned my wife, I wasn't seventy-five years old anymore.

I was fifty-five.

Standing beside a hospital bed.

Holding the hand of the woman I loved.

Ethan's mother.

My wife.

The woman who made me promise.

“Dad?””

Ethan's voice pulled me back.

Everyone was waiting.

Everyone except Michael.

He already knew.

“I think it's time they heard,” Michael said.

I looked at him.

“You don't get to tell my family anything.””

“Then tell them yourself.””

I took a breath.

“Your mother knew about the company situation.””

Ethan stared.

“What does Mom have to do with this?””

“Everything.””

I sat down.

Because my legs suddenly felt weak.

“Your mother found the evidence against Michael before I did.””

Emma looked surprised.

“She did?””

I nodded.

“She was the one who discovered the missing money.””

Michael crossed his arms.

“And then she found out something else.””

I ignored him.

“Your mother was going to report Michael.””

Ethan looked at the folder.

“But she died before that happened.””

The room went quiet.

“Yes.””

Emma whispered:

“How?””

I looked down.

“She had a heart attack.””

Michael smiled slightly.

“But was it really just a heart attack?””

Ethan immediately turned toward him.

“What are you implying?””

Michael shrugged.

“I'm saying your father knows more than he told you.””

I stood up.

“Enough.””

But Ethan stepped between us.

“No.””

His voice shook.

“I want the truth.””

I looked at my son.

And I realized something painful.

The secret I thought I was protecting him from had already poisoned his life.

“I promised your mother I wouldn't tell you.””

Ethan's eyes filled with confusion.

“Tell me what?””

I looked at the photograph on the shelf.

The one of my wife holding a young Ethan.

“She didn't die because of the company.””

Everyone became still.

“She died because she was investigating Michael.””

Michael's smile faded.

Ethan whispered:

“What?””

“She discovered he had been threatening people who tried to expose him.””

Emma covered her mouth.

“Dad...””

I nodded.

“Your mother was scared.””

Michael laughed.

“She was paranoid.””

I turned toward him.

“No.””

My voice was stronger now.

“She was brave.””

The room went silent.

Then Ethan asked:

“Why didn't you tell me?””

Because that was the question I had feared most.

“Because you were twenty-seven years old. You were already drowning in guilt. I didn't want you to spend your life believing you lost your mother because of your mistakes.””

Ethan looked away.

“I thought you hated me.””

My heart broke.

“What?””

He swallowed.

“After Mom died, you became distant.””

I shook my head.

“No, son.””

I stepped closer.

“I was trying to keep you alive.””

The words hung in the air.

Michael suddenly pulled out his phone.

“You should ask Sophia why she really wanted that power of attorney.””

Everyone turned.

“What?””

Michael smiled.

“She wasn't trying to steal your money.””

I looked at him.

“Then what was she doing?””

He pressed a button.

A recording played.

Sophia's voice filled the room.

“Once Richard signs everything over, Ethan won't have a choice anymore.””

Ethan's face changed.

Sophia continued:

“He'll finally know what his father did.””

The recording stopped.

Nobody spoke.

Michael looked at Ethan.

“She planned this because she wanted you to turn against him.””

Ethan stared at the phone.

“Why?””

Michael answered.

“Because she was never after your father's money.””

He looked at me.

“She was after something much bigger.””

My phone suddenly buzzed.

A message.

From Sophia.

I opened it.

One sentence.

*I KNOW YOU FOUND MICHAEL. COME ALONE IF YOU WANT TO KNOW WHO REALLY FORGED YOUR SIGNATURE.*

I looked at Ethan.

Then at Emma.

They both saw my expression.

“What is it?”” Emma asked.

I didn't answer.

Because for the first time, I realized something terrifying.

Sophia wasn't working alone.

And the person who forged my signature wasn't the person we had been chasing.

May you like

It was someone much closer.

Someone inside my own family.
