Chapter 10: The Brother Who Came Back
The sound of Daniel’s voice coming from upstairs felt impossible.
For twenty years, I had trusted him.
For twenty years, I had wondered if he was the only person who truly understood what I had lost.
And now he was standing inside the house where my son had nearly destroyed our family.
“Richard?””
His voice echoed down the stairs.
Ethan immediately moved in front of me.
A protective instinct.
The same instinct I had spent my entire life trying to teach him.
“Stay behind me,” Ethan whispered.
I almost laughed.
Not because it was funny.
Because twenty minutes earlier, my son had been the person I needed protection from.
Now he was protecting me.
The basement door creaked.
Daniel appeared at the top of the stairs.
His face was pale.
He looked at the room.
The files.
The photographs.
The evidence Sophia had collected.
Then he looked at me.
“I was afraid you would find this.””
My chest tightened.
“You knew?””
Daniel slowly walked down.
“Yes.””
Emma stepped forward.
“Then explain.””
Daniel looked at her.
“I should have told Richard years ago.””
“That isn't an explanation,” she replied.
“No.””
He nodded.
“It isn't.””
For once, Daniel wasn't trying to defend himself.
He wasn't trying to twist the truth.
He looked tired.
Old.
Like carrying the secret had finally become heavier than keeping it.
Ethan pointed toward the documents.
“You knew Sophia was doing this?””
Daniel looked at him.
“Yes.””
Ethan’s face hardened.
“And you said nothing?””
“I tried to stop her.””
I shook my head.
“Try harder.””
The words came out colder than I intended.
Daniel looked down.
“I deserved that.””
Silence filled the basement.
Then I asked the question that had haunted me all night.
“Why?””
Daniel looked at me.
“Because I was the one who introduced Michael to your company.””
The room froze.
Michael, who had been standing near the wall, looked up.
“What?””
Daniel continued.
“Twenty years ago, I thought Michael was a genius. He had connections. He had investors. He promised he could make the company bigger.””
I stared at him.
“You brought him into my life.””
“Yes.””
“And then he destroyed everything.””
Daniel swallowed.
“I know.””
I walked closer.
“Do you?””
My voice shook.
“Do you know what it was like watching my wife die while wondering if I could have prevented it?””
Daniel closed his eyes.
“Yes.””
“No, you don't.””
I pointed at the files.
“You weren't there when Ethan blamed himself. You weren't there when I worked until my hands hurt because I needed to keep our family together.””
“I know.””
“You keep saying that.””
I looked at him.
“But you never did anything.””
Daniel’s eyes filled with regret.
“I did.””
I stopped.
“What?””
He reached into his jacket.
Then he pulled out a small envelope.
“I found this six months ago.””
My heart stopped.
“What is it?””
“Something Sophia was looking for.””
He handed it to me.
The envelope was old.
My name was written on the front.
But the handwriting wasn't familiar.
I opened it slowly.
Inside was a letter.
From my wife.
Another one.
My hands began to shake.
“Where did you get this?””
Daniel looked away.
“Your wife gave it to me before she died.””
The room went silent.
“You had this for twenty years?””
“Yes.””
The anger I felt was almost unbearable.
“Why?””
“Because she told me not to give it to you unless Sophia or Michael came back.””
Ethan looked confused.
“Mom knew?””
Daniel nodded.
“She knew they would eventually try again.””
I unfolded the letter.
The first line made my breath stop.
*Richard, if you are reading this, it means the people I feared have found a way back into our family.*
I kept reading.
My wife's words felt like her voice.
Like she was standing beside me again.
She wrote that Michael had not been working alone.
She wrote that someone younger would eventually be used to enter our family.
Someone who could manipulate Ethan.
Someone who could make him turn against me.
Then I reached the final paragraph.
And my hands froze.
*The person behind this does not want your money, Richard. They want Ethan to hate you. Because if Ethan hates you, he will become the weapon they need.*
I looked up.
Everyone was silent.
Daniel whispered:
“She knew.””
I folded the letter.
“She knew everything.””
Then Ethan noticed something.
“Dad.””
I looked at him.
He pointed at the bottom of the page.
“There is another name.””
My eyes moved downward.
A name written beneath my wife's signature.
A name I had never expected.
A name that made Michael step backward.
Because it was the name of the person who had helped her uncover the truth.
May you like
The name of the person who had been investigating Michael from the beginning.
*Sophia’s mother.*
