Chapter 11: The Truth Sophia Never Knew
The room changed when we saw the name.
Not because it answered everything.
Because it created a bigger question.
Why would Sophia's own mother help my wife?
Ethan stared at the letter.
“My mother knew Sophia’s family?””
Daniel nodded slowly.
“Yes.””
I looked at him.
“You knew too.””
“Yes.””
“And you still let Sophia marry Ethan?””
Daniel looked ashamed.
“I tried to warn you.””
“When?””
“Before the wedding.””
I remembered.
The strange conversation.
The way Daniel told me he had concerns about Sophia.
I had dismissed it.
I thought he was being overprotective.
I thought he was judging her unfairly.
I had no idea he knew the history.
“What did you know?”” Emma asked.
Daniel sat down.
“Sophia’s father was obsessed with revenge.””
“Against Dad?”” Ethan asked.
“Yes.””
“Why?””
Daniel looked at me.
“Because he believed Richard destroyed Michael.””
I shook my head.
“I exposed a criminal.””
Daniel nodded.
“But criminals don't see themselves as criminals.””
Michael looked away.
No one needed to explain who he was talking about.
Then Ethan picked up the letter again.
“There’s something missing.””
“What?””
He pointed.
“Mom says Sophia’s mother helped her.””
He looked at Daniel.
“But why would Sophia do this if her own mother knew the truth?””
Nobody answered.
Because that was the mystery.
Then my phone rang.
Sophia.
Everyone stared.
Ethan answered.
“What do you want?””
Her voice was quiet.
Not angry.
Not dramatic.
Just tired.
“Ethan, I know you found the basement.””
He froze.
“How?””
She didn't answer.
Instead:
“Because I built it.””
His expression changed.
“What?””
“I knew your father would eventually find out.””
I stepped closer.
“Sophia.””
She heard my voice.
“Richard.””
Her tone changed.
For the first time, she sounded afraid.
“You weren't supposed to be there.””
“Who are you working for?””
Silence.
Then she whispered:
“I thought I knew.””
That answer confused everyone.
“What does that mean?””
Sophia took a shaky breath.
“My whole life, I was told your father ruined my family.””
Nobody moved.
“But my mother knew the truth.””
Ethan said:
“Your mother helped mine.””
“Yes.””
Her voice cracked.
“She tried to tell me.””
I frowned.
“Tell you what?””
“That my father was lying.””
The room became silent.
Sophia continued.
“When I was young, I believed him. I believed Richard was the reason our family suffered.””
“And now?””
A long pause.
“Now I know he used me.””
Ethan looked shocked.
“You expect me to believe that?””
“No.””
Her voice broke.
“I don't.””
That was the first honest thing I had heard from her.
“I did terrible things.””
Ethan closed his eyes.
“Why?””
“Because I thought I was fixing something broken.””
She paused.
“But I wasn't.””
I looked at Daniel.
Then at the letter.
“Where is your father?””
Sophia didn't answer.
“Sophia.””
“He disappeared.””
“When?””
“Yesterday.””
My stomach tightened.
“Why?””
“Because he knew I was going to find the truth.””
Ethan looked confused.
“Then why did you continue?””
The silence lasted several seconds.
Then Sophia said:
“Because I was afraid.””
“Of what?””
“Of him.””
Nobody spoke.
Then she added:
“He told me if I stopped, he would destroy Ethan.””
Ethan went pale.
“He threatened me?””
“Yes.””
Her voice became smaller.
“He said if I didn't make you turn against your father, he would reveal something about you.””
My heart tightened.
“What?””
Sophia hesitated.
Then:
“The debt.””
Ethan looked down.
His old mistake.
The one he thought was buried.
“He knew about your father paying your debt,” Sophia said.
“And?””
“He planned to expose it.””
Ethan whispered:
“Why?””
“Because he knew you would feel ashamed.””
I looked at my son.
The same wound.
Still being used.
Sophia continued:
“I didn't marry you because I hated you, Ethan.””
Nobody moved.
“I married you because my father told me you were the key.””
Ethan’s face broke.
“But somewhere along the way...””
She stopped.
“When?””
“Somewhere along the way, I actually loved you.””
The call became silent.
Then Ethan asked:
“Do you still have the original documents?””
Sophia answered immediately.
“Yes.””
“Where?””
Another pause.
Then:
“With the person who really forged your father's signature.””
I felt cold.
“Who?””
Sophia whispered:
May you like
“Your daughter.””
Everyone turned toward Emma.
