Chapter 9: The Woman Who Tried to Take My Baby Before Birth
The word social worker changed everything.
Because Linda wasn’t just making threats anymore.
She was creating a story.
And I knew exactly what kind of story she was trying to tell.
That I was unstable.
That I was emotional.
That I was a danger.
That she was the responsible grandmother trying to help.
It was almost impressive.
If it wasn’t terrifying.
“I want an attorney,” I said.
Daniel looked at me.
“You’re serious?””
“Yes.””
He nodded immediately.
“Okay.””
No argument.
No hesitation.
That was the first time in weeks I felt like he was truly standing beside me.
The nurse stepped out.
A few minutes later, Linda entered with a woman carrying a folder.
The woman looked professional.
Calm.
Kind.
That almost made it worse.
Because Linda had clearly prepared.
“Sarah,” Linda said softly.
I stared at her.
“You brought a social worker to my hospital room.””
She sighed.
“Because I’m worried.””
I almost laughed.
“About me?””
“Yes.””
The social worker looked between us.
“Mrs. Carter, I’m here because concerns were reported.””
“By who?””
Nobody answered.
I already knew.
Linda sat down.
“I don’t want conflict.””
I looked at her.
“You locked me in a bathroom.””
Her expression tightened.
“That was a misunderstanding.””
Rachel, standing near the door, immediately spoke.
“I recorded it.””
Linda ignored her.
“I’m simply concerned about Sarah’s ability to make calm decisions.””
The social worker looked at me.
“Can you explain what happened tonight?””
I opened my mouth.
But before I could speak, Linda interrupted.
“She has been under extreme stress.””
Daniel stepped forward.
“Stop.””
Linda looked at him.
“Daniel.””
“No.””
His voice was different.
Stronger.
“She doesn’t get to rewrite what happened.””
The room became silent.
He continued.
“My mother locked my pregnant wife in a bathroom.””
The social worker looked surprised.
Linda’s face hardened.
“Daniel, you’re emotional.””
“No.””
He shook his head.
“I’m finally paying attention.””
That was the moment I saw Linda lose control.
Not completely.
Just enough.
Her perfect expression cracked.
“You would choose her over your own mother?””
Daniel looked at her.
“I’m choosing my wife.””
The silence afterward was powerful.
Linda looked at me.
And for the first time, I saw something I had never seen before.
Fear.
Not guilt.
Fear.
Because she realized she was losing control of Daniel.
The social worker asked:
“Mrs. Carter, do you have any evidence supporting your concerns?””
Linda opened her folder.
“I have documentation.””
My heart dropped.
Of course she did.
She pulled out papers.
“The mother has shown signs of instability.””
I looked at the pages.
False reports.
False signatures.
A carefully built trap.
Then Vanessa stepped forward.
“I have evidence too.””
Everyone turned.
Linda’s face changed.
“Vanessa.””
Her daughter didn’t flinch.
“I have recordings.””
The social worker looked at her.
“Of what?””
Vanessa looked at her mother.
“Of you admitting everything.””
Linda went completely still.
The social worker looked confused.
“Admitting what?””
Vanessa pulled out her phone.
But before she could press play…
Linda’s phone rang.
She looked at the screen.
And all the color disappeared from her face.
“What happened?”” Daniel asked.
She didn’t answer.
The phone kept ringing.
Finally, she answered.
“Hello?””
Everyone watched her.
Then her expression changed.
Panic.
Real panic.
“No.””
A pause.
“That’s impossible.””
Another pause.
Then she whispered:
“Who found it?””
My skin prickled.
The room went silent.
Linda slowly lowered the phone.
Daniel stepped forward.
“Mom?””
She looked at him.
Then at me.
And for the first time all night, she looked completely defeated.
“The police are at my house.””
Nobody moved.
Vanessa covered her mouth.
“Why?””
Linda didn’t answer.
The social worker looked concerned.
“What did they find?””
Linda stared at the floor.
Then she said the words that changed everything.
“They found the original documents.””
My heart raced.
“What documents?””
Linda looked up.
“The ones I thought were destroyed.””
May you like
And then she looked directly at me.
“The ones proving your signature was forged.””
