Chapter 14: The Final Betrayal

Linda looked different when we saw her again.

Not powerful.

Not confident.

Just tired.

She sat across from us in a small interview room at the police station.

For the first time, she had nowhere to perform.

No guests.

No wedding.

No family to impress.

Just the truth.

Daniel placed the photo on the table.

“Who is Ethan working for?””

Linda looked at it.

Her face changed.

Only slightly.

But enough.

“You know.””

Daniel leaned forward.

“Mom.””

She looked away.

“I didn’t think he would go this far.””

My stomach dropped.

“You knew?””

Linda closed her eyes.

“I knew he wanted something.””

Vanessa stood.

“You knew my husband was involved?””

Linda looked at her daughter.

“I was trying to protect you.””

Vanessa laughed through tears.

“That’s your excuse for everything.””

Linda said nothing.

The officer placed the documents on the table.

“Mrs. Carter, we need answers.””

For a long moment, she stayed silent.

Then she finally spoke.

“Ethan came to me.””

Daniel frowned.

“Why?””

“He said he could help.””

“With what?””

Linda looked at me.

“With making sure the baby stayed in the family.””

I felt a chill.

“The family?””

She nodded.

“He believed Sarah would take Daniel away.””

I stared at her.

“You both thought I was stealing him?””

Linda looked uncomfortable.

“No.””

“Then what?””

She whispered:

“We thought you were replacing us.””

The words were almost too honest.

For years, Linda had hidden behind “family.””

But underneath it was something simpler.

Fear.

Fear of becoming unnecessary.

Fear of losing control.

Fear of change.

The officer asked:

“What did Ethan want?””

Linda hesitated.

Then said:

“He wanted access.””

“To what?””

She looked at Vanessa.

“My daughter’s inheritance.””

Vanessa froze.

“What?””

Linda continued.

“Ethan had debts.””

Her daughter shook her head.

“I don’t understand.””

“He believed marrying you would solve his problems.””

The room went silent.

Daniel whispered:

“So he wasn’t helping Mom.””

Linda looked down.

“No.””

She looked defeated.

“He was using me too.””

That was the moment everything became clear.

Linda had been controlling.

Ethan had been calculating.

And together, they had created something much worse.

A plan.

A plan where I lost my child.

Vanessa covered her face.

“I married someone who never loved me.””

I looked at her.

“You didn’t know.””

She shook her head.

“But I should have.””

“No.””

I said it quietly.

“You trusted someone.””

Her eyes filled with tears.

“So did you.””

That hurt because it was true.

We were all victims of someone who knew exactly how to manipulate love.

The officer received a phone call.

He stepped away.

A few minutes later, he returned.

“We found Ethan.””

Everyone looked up.

“Where?””

The officer looked at me.

“He was near the hospital.””

My heart stopped.

“Why?””

The officer’s expression changed.

“He had a folder.””

“What folder?””

The officer placed a plastic evidence bag on the table.

Inside was a document.

My name.

My baby’s name.

And a date.

The date was tomorrow.

My delivery date.

Daniel stared.

“What is that?””

The officer answered:

“A guardianship transfer agreement.””

I felt sick.

“He planned to have it ready before the birth.””

The officer nodded.

Then he added:

“There’s one more thing.””

“What?””

“He admitted Linda helped him.””

I looked at Linda.

She looked away.

But the officer wasn’t finished.

“He also said something else.””

My heart raced.

“What?””

The officer opened his notebook.

“He said the baby was never the goal.””

The room went silent.

“Then what was?””

The officer looked directly at Daniel.

“Your family’s money.””

Nobody moved.

Because suddenly, the baby wasn’t the only thing they wanted.

They wanted everything attached to us.

The inheritance.

The house.

The future.

May you like

And then the officer said:

“Ethan also admitted he wasn’t acting alone.””
