Chapter 11: The Person Behind Linda’s Plan
The lawyer’s office was quiet.
Too quiet.
The kind of quiet that makes every small sound feel important.
The ticking clock.
The movement of papers.
The sound of someone breathing.
Daniel sat beside me.
Vanessa sat across from us.
None of us spoke.
Then the door opened.
A man in a gray suit entered.
“Mr. and Mrs. Carter.””
He placed a folder on the table.
“My name is Michael Reeves.””
Daniel looked at him.
“You represented my mother?””
“Yes.””
My hands tightened.
“Were you part of this?””
Michael sat down.
“No.””
His answer came immediately.
“I was misled.””
I didn’t trust him.
Not after everything.
“What does that mean?””
He opened the folder.
“Your mother told me she was helping a pregnant woman who was struggling.””
My stomach turned.
“She made me look unstable.””
Michael nodded.
“Yes.””
Daniel looked furious.
“She lied to you.””
“She did.””
The lawyer pushed several papers across the table.
“These documents were prepared under false information.””
I looked at them.
The same paperwork.
The same lies.
But then I noticed something.
A signature.
Not mine.
Not Daniel’s.
The lawyer pointed.
“This is where I became suspicious.””
“What is it?””
“This signature was added after the documents were finalized.””
Vanessa frowned.
“By who?””
Michael looked at her.
“That’s the problem.””
He opened another file.
“The person who altered the documents wasn’t your mother.””
The room went silent.
Daniel stared.
“What?””
Michael turned the page.
“The edits were made from an account connected to someone else.””
My heart started racing.
“Who?””
Michael hesitated.
Then said:
“Your sister-in-law.””
Everyone looked at Vanessa.
Her face went white.
“No.””
Daniel immediately shook his head.
“That’s impossible.””
Michael looked at her.
“Miss Carter, do you know anything about this?””
Vanessa looked horrified.
“No.””
I watched her.
Waiting.
Because after everything, trust felt dangerous.
But something was different.
Vanessa wasn’t defensive.
She looked devastated.
“I didn’t do this.””
Michael studied her.
“I believe you.””
Daniel frowned.
“Then why is her account connected?””
Michael opened another document.
“Because someone accessed it.””
Vanessa whispered:
“My password.””
“What?””
“My mother knew my password.””
Nobody spoke.
Then Vanessa started crying.
“She used my accounts before.””
Daniel looked at her.
“For what?””
Vanessa wiped her face.
“Everything.””
The realization hit all of us.
Linda hadn’t just controlled people.
She had hidden behind them.
Used their names.
Used their trust.
Made everyone look guilty.
Michael leaned forward.
“There’s something else you need to know.””
I looked at him.
“What?””
He opened the final folder.
“Your mother-in-law had another plan.””
My stomach tightened.
“What plan?””
He looked at me.
“She wanted Daniel to sign divorce paperwork.””
The room went silent.
Daniel stood.
“What?””
Michael nodded.
“She believed separating you before the birth would make custody easier.””
I felt like the floor disappeared.
“She planned our divorce?””
“Yes.””
Daniel sat back down slowly.
His face was broken.
Michael continued.
“She believed once you were separated, she could convince a court that you were unstable and that Daniel needed family support.””
I looked at my husband.
All the moments he had dismissed my concerns.
All the times he told me his mother “meant well.””
He looked like he was finally seeing the monster behind the mask.
“I almost lost you,” he whispered.
I didn’t answer.
Because the truth was…
I almost lost myself.
Then Michael’s phone rang.
He looked at the screen.
His expression changed.
“What?””
A pause.
Then he stood.
“I need to go.””
Daniel looked up.
“What happened?””
Michael grabbed his coat.
“The police found another file.””
“What file?””
The lawyer looked directly at me.
“One that Linda kept hidden.””
My heart stopped.
“What was inside?””
Michael hesitated.
May you like
Then said:
“Your birth plan.””
