Chapter 1: The Bathroom Door
“Don’t worry, Sarah. Tonight is about family.””
That was what Linda had told me three hours before she locked me inside a bathroom and left me to give birth alone.
I believed her because I wanted to believe her.
I was eight months pregnant, wearing a pale blue dress I had carefully chosen because Vanessa, my sister-in-law, had asked all the women in the family to look “elegant but not attention-seeking” at her luxury wedding outside Chicago.
I remember laughing when she said it.
I thought it was just a bride being nervous.
I didn’t know those words would come back to haunt me.
The hotel was everything Vanessa wanted—towering glass windows, crystal chandeliers, white roses covering every table, and a ballroom that looked like it belonged in a magazine. Guests walked around holding champagne glasses while a string quartet played softly near the entrance.
Daniel, my husband, squeezed my hand as we entered.
“You okay?”” he asked.
I smiled and rested my other hand on my stomach.
“Just tired. Your sister definitely knows how to make an entrance.””
Daniel laughed.
“She’s been planning this since she was twelve.””
I watched him smile, and for a moment, everything felt normal.
That was the dangerous part.
Normal moments make you ignore the warning signs.
Linda had been cold toward me for months. She never openly said she disliked me. She was smarter than that.
She used small comments.
“You’re still working while pregnant? Interesting choice.””
“Vanessa never complained this much when she was planning her wedding.””
“Daniel has always been very family-oriented. I hope marriage hasn’t changed that.””
Every sentence sounded harmless.
Every sentence had a blade hidden inside.
But that night, I decided I wouldn’t let her ruin Vanessa’s wedding.
I wanted peace.
I wanted my baby to arrive in a family that wasn’t already divided.
Then, halfway through dinner, my body betrayed me.
A sharp pain ripped through my stomach.
I froze.
The laughter around me became distant.
I reached for Daniel’s arm.
“Daniel.””
He turned immediately.
“What’s wrong?””
I swallowed.
“My water just broke.””
For a second, he looked confused.
Then his face changed.
“Wait. Are you sure?””
Another wave of pain hit, stronger this time.
I grabbed the edge of the table.
“Yes.””
Daniel pushed his chair back.
“I’m getting the car.””
But before he could move, Linda appeared beside us.
I still remember her first reaction.
Not fear.
Not concern.
Her eyes went straight to my dress.
Then she looked across the room.
Vanessa was standing near the dance floor, preparing for her first dance with her new husband.
Linda’s expression hardened.
“Not here,” she whispered.
I stared at her.
“What?””
She leaned closer.
“You cannot do this right now.””
My mouth fell open.
“I’m in labor.””
Her smile disappeared.
“Lower your voice.””
I couldn’t believe what I was hearing.
“Linda, I need a hospital.””
Daniel grabbed his jacket.
“I’ll bring the car around.””
But Linda stepped between us.
“I know a private hallway. She can get outside without everyone noticing.””
I looked at Daniel.
He looked relieved.
“Good idea, Mom. Can you help her get out?””
That was the moment I should have realized something was wrong.
But I was scared.
I was in pain.
And I trusted my husband’s mother because she sounded like she knew what she was doing.
Linda took my arm.
“This way.””
She guided me away from the ballroom.
The music became quieter.
The laughter disappeared.
We walked down a hallway covered with expensive artwork and soft golden lights.
Then she opened a door.
“This bathroom connects to the staff hallway,” she said.
I stepped inside.
“Where’s the exit?””
“Just wait here.””
I frowned.
“What?””
She looked annoyed.
“Vanessa’s first dance is in five minutes. Let it happen. Then we’ll leave.””
My heart started racing.
“Linda, I’m having contractions.””
She didn’t answer.
She just stepped outside.
I moved toward the door.
“Linda?””
She looked back.
“You need to think about Vanessa tonight.””
Then she pulled the door shut.
A second later…
Click.
The lock turned.
I stopped breathing.
I grabbed the handle.
“Linda?””
No answer.
I pulled harder.
The door didn’t move.
“Linda!””
My voice echoed against the bathroom walls.
“OPEN THE DOOR!””
My hands started shaking.
I hit the door with my palm.
“Daniel!””
Another contraction hit.
I collapsed against the counter, trying to breathe through the pain.
Then I heard something.
A small gasp.
Not from outside.
From inside the bathroom.
I slowly turned around.
The last stall door opened.
A woman in a black suit stepped out.
She looked just as shocked as I was.
“Oh my God.””
I stared at her.
“Who are you?””
She raised both hands.
“I’m Rachel. The wedding planner.””
My eyes widened.
“The wedding planner?””
She nodded slowly.
“Why are you locked in here?””
Her face changed.
Because she wasn’t surprised.
She looked terrified.
“Because your mother-in-law locked me in here twenty minutes ago.””
The room suddenly felt smaller.
I held onto the sink.
“Why?””
Rachel looked at the locked door.
Then she pulled out her phone.
“Because I heard something I wasn’t supposed to hear.””
She pressed a button.
A recording began playing.
At first, there was only background noise.
Then Linda’s voice filled the bathroom.
“If Sarah goes into labor tonight, keep Daniel away from her until after the reception.””
My blood went cold.
Rachel watched my face.
The recording continued.
A man’s voice asked:
“What if she needs an ambulance?””
Then Linda laughed.
“That would create exactly the scene I’m trying to prevent.””
I covered my mouth.
My baby moved inside me.
I felt a terrifying realization settle over me.
This wasn’t an accident.
Linda hadn’t forgotten about my emergency.
She had planned for it.
And then Rachel looked at me and whispered:
“That’s not even the worst part.””
She moved closer.
“The recording goes much further.””
May you like
She pressed play again.
And when I heard Linda say Daniel’s name, I knew my husband was about to become part of a nightmare I never saw coming.
