Chapter 2: The Secret Arrangement
Rachel held the phone between us like it was a piece of evidence in a crime.
Because maybe it was.
My hands were trembling so badly that I had to press them against my stomach to steady myself.
“Play it,” I whispered.
Rachel hesitated.
“Sarah, are you sure?””
Another contraction tightened across my body.
I looked at the locked door.
At the phone.
At the place where my husband’s mother had left me.
“Yes.””
Rachel pressed the screen.
The recording continued.
Linda’s voice came through again.
“I already talked to the hospital coordinator.””
My heart stopped.
A second voice responded.
“Linda, are you serious?””
“I’m protecting my daughter’s wedding.””
I felt sick.
Rachel looked at me.
“Listen.””
The voice on the recording continued.
“What exactly did you arrange?””
Linda answered calmly.
“Nothing dramatic. Just enough delay.””
“Delay?””
“Yes. If Sarah arrives at the hospital after the reception, Daniel can stay with Vanessa tonight. He doesn’t need to spend his sister’s wedding night sitting beside Sarah.””
I covered my mouth.
The room spun.
Rachel grabbed my elbow.
“Sarah, sit down.””
I couldn’t.
I couldn’t process it.
The woman who was supposed to be excited about her first grandchild had been planning how to separate me from my husband while I was in labor.
And the worst part?
Daniel trusted her.
He had walked away believing his mother was helping me.
I looked at Rachel.
“Why were you recording her?””
Rachel sighed.
“Because this isn’t the first time Linda has tried to control something at this wedding.””
She explained that earlier that evening, she had overheard Linda arguing with Vanessa.
Not a normal mother-daughter disagreement.
Something uglier.
“She told Vanessa that if anything went wrong tonight, it would be because people were trying to steal attention from her,” Rachel said.
I closed my eyes.
I knew exactly who she meant.
Me.
Rachel continued.
“She was furious that your pregnancy was mentioned in the family toast.””
I remembered.
During dinner, Vanessa’s uncle had raised his glass and said, “And soon this family will welcome another little blessing.””
Everyone had smiled.
Except Linda.
She had stared at me like I had committed a crime.
“I thought she was just jealous,” Rachel said.
Then she looked at the locked door.
“But I didn’t think she would do this.””
A loud bang came from the hallway.
Both of us froze.
Someone was outside.
“Linda?”” I called.
No answer.
Instead, we heard voices.
One was Daniel’s.
“Mom? Where is Sarah?””
My chest tightened.
I rushed to the door.
“Daniel!””
I screamed.
“I’m in here!””
Silence.
Then footsteps.
“Sarah?””
I almost cried from relief.
“Yes! I’m locked in!””
I heard him grab the handle.
“What?””
“Your mother locked the door!””
There was a pause.
A long one.
Too long.
“Mom?”” Daniel called.
I waited.
I expected anger.
I expected him to demand answers.
But Linda spoke softly.
“Daniel, calm down.””
My stomach dropped.
“Calm down?”” I whispered.
Rachel looked at me.
We both listened.
Linda continued.
“She’s overwhelmed. She’s making this bigger than it needs to be.””
My eyes filled with disbelief.
I pushed against the door.
“Daniel, I’m having contractions!””
“I know,” he said.
But his voice sounded uncertain.
Then Linda whispered something too quiet to hear.
Rachel immediately lifted her phone.
She was still recording.
The hallway went silent.
Then Daniel spoke.
“Mom… you said she was just waiting until after the dance.””
My blood ran cold.
He knew.
Maybe not everything.
But enough.
I stepped back from the door.
“Daniel?””
No answer.
“Daniel, what did she tell you?””
A few seconds passed.
Then he said:
“Sarah…”
His voice cracked.
“I didn’t know she locked you in.””
Rachel looked at me.
The important word wasn’t locked.
It was know.
He didn’t deny knowing about the plan.
He only denied one detail.
I felt something inside me break.
“Daniel,” I whispered.
“What else did you know?””
Silence.
Then Linda said:
“Don’t answer her.””
My entire body went still.
Rachel’s eyes widened.
She looked at me.
“She’s controlling him too.””
I stepped closer to the door.
“Daniel, open this door.””
A few seconds passed.
Then I heard the lock move.
The door opened.
Daniel stood there.
His face was pale.
Behind him stood Linda.
She looked irritated, not guilty.
That was the moment I realized something.
She wasn’t afraid of being caught.
She was afraid of losing control.
Daniel reached for me.
“Sarah, I’m sorry.””
I pulled away.
“Did you know she contacted the hospital?””
His face changed.
Only slightly.
But I saw it.
Linda stepped forward.
“You’re emotional.””
Rachel immediately raised her phone.
“I have a recording.””
For the first time that night, Linda looked afraid.
Just for a second.
Then she smiled.
“That’s not going to matter.””
Rachel frowned.
“What?””
Linda looked directly at her.
“Because I already made sure nobody would believe you.””
My heart sank.
“What did you do?””
Linda reached into her purse.
Pulled out her phone.
And showed us a message.
A message sent hours earlier.
The name at the top made my blood freeze.
It wasn’t Vanessa.
May you like
It wasn’t the hotel.
It was my doctor’s office.
