Chapter 5: My Sister-in-Law’s Secret

I almost didn’t press play.

Not because I wasn’t curious.

Because I was afraid.

There are moments when your heart already knows something is going to hurt before your mind catches up.

This was one of those moments.

I looked at Rachel.

“Should I watch this now?””

She glanced toward the hospital door.

“After everything tonight? I think you deserve the truth.””

I pressed play.

The video began in the hotel’s private lounge.

The quality wasn’t perfect, but the voices were clear.

Linda was standing near the window.

Vanessa was in front of her.

Still wearing her wedding dress.

Still looking like a bride.

But not a happy one.

“Mom,” Vanessa said in the video, “tell me you didn’t do this.””

Linda sighed.

“Don’t start.””

My fingers tightened around the blanket.

Vanessa continued.

“You locked Sarah away.””

“I protected the wedding.””

“You humiliated her.””

“I protected you.””

Vanessa looked shocked.

“Why do you keep saying that?””

Linda turned around.

“Because someone has to.””

The video shook slightly.

Vanessa must have been holding the phone secretly.

Then Linda said something that made my stomach drop.

“Your brother was always going to choose Sarah eventually.””

I stopped breathing.

Vanessa stared at her.

“What?””

Linda continued.

“He was already becoming more loyal to her than this family.””

“That’s his wife.””

“Exactly.””

The word sounded poisonous.

Linda walked closer.

“I spent years building this family. I sacrificed everything for Daniel and you. I won’t let some woman come in and change the way things work.””

Vanessa’s voice became quiet.

“Mom…”

“I needed Daniel to remember where he belonged.””

The video ended.

I sat there silently.

Rachel watched my face.

“That’s not all.””

I looked at her.

“There’s more?””

She nodded.

Vanessa had sent a second message.

Another video.

This one was recorded inside the hotel office.

It showed Linda talking to someone else.

A man.

I recognized him immediately.

The hotel manager.

My heart started racing.

Linda was saying:

“The paperwork just needs to be entered tonight.””

The manager looked nervous.

“Mrs. Carter, I don’t know if that’s allowed.””

Linda smiled.

“Everyone has a price.””

I felt sick.

The manager in the video looked uncomfortable.

“I can’t change hospital records.””

“You’re not changing them.””

Linda leaned closer.

“You’re correcting them.””

The video stopped.

I stared at the black screen.

“She bribed someone?””

Rachel nodded.

“Maybe.””

“Maybe?””

“We need proof.””

I looked toward the hospital room door.

“Daniel needs to see this.””

When he returned, he immediately knew something was wrong.

“What happened?””

I handed him the phone.

“Your sister recorded something.””

He watched.

I watched him.

His reaction was different this time.

No excuses.

No confusion.

Just pain.

When the video ended, he put the phone down.

“My mom…”

He couldn’t finish.

I looked away.

“I need space.””

He nodded slowly.

“I understand.””

But he didn’t leave.

“Sarah?””

I looked at him.

“I’m sorry.””

The words were simple.

But for the first time, they sounded real.

“I should have protected you.””

I swallowed.

“Yes.””

He looked down.

“I spent my whole life thinking my mother was just strong.””

He gave a broken laugh.

“I didn’t realize she was controlling everything.””

A nurse entered the room.

“Mrs. Carter?””

“Yes?””

“There’s someone here asking to see you.””

I frowned.

“Who?””

The nurse looked at her clipboard.

“Linda Carter.””

My stomach tightened.

“No.””

The nurse nodded.

“I thought you might say that.””

She turned to leave.

Then stopped.

“Actually… there’s another person waiting with her.””

I looked up.

“Who?””

The nurse hesitated.

“Your mother-in-law’s attorney.””

The room went silent.

Daniel stood immediately.

“Attorney?””

The nurse nodded.

“He says he needs to discuss custody arrangements before the baby is born.””

My blood went cold.

Before the baby was born.

Linda wasn’t just trying to control tonight.

She was preparing for tomorrow.

And then my phone buzzed.

A new message appeared.

From an unknown number.

May you like

The message contained one sentence:

*“Ask Daniel why your mother already has a nursery prepared in her house.””*
