Chapter 8: The File Hidden in Her House

I couldn’t stop staring at the photograph.

The document on Vanessa’s phone looked official.

Too official.

My name.

My address.

My unborn child’s information.

And underneath it…

A signature pretending to be mine.

“She forged this too?”” I asked.

Vanessa nodded.

“I think so.””

“You think?””

She looked ashamed.

“I found it in Mom’s office, but I didn’t know what it was at first.””

I looked closer.

The words blurred together.

Custody.

Temporary guardianship.

Emergency placement.

My stomach turned.

“She was planning this before my baby was even born.””

Vanessa’s eyes filled with tears.

“Yes.””

For a moment, neither of us spoke.

The hospital lobby moved around us.

People walked by carrying coffee.

Families laughed softly.

A baby cried somewhere down the hallway.

And I sat there realizing someone had been planning to remove my child from me while I was still carrying them.

“Why didn’t you tell me earlier?””

Vanessa looked down.

“Because I was scared.””

“Of her?””

She nodded.

The honesty surprised me.

“She’s my mother.””

I softened slightly.

Not because I forgave everything.

But because I understood something.

Linda didn’t just control outsiders.

She controlled the people closest to her.

Vanessa showed me another photo.

“This was inside the nursery.””

The picture showed a beautiful room.

White furniture.

Soft blankets.

A rocking chair.

It looked perfect.

Almost too perfect.

Then I noticed something.

A framed sign above the crib.

My hands went cold.

“What is that?””

Vanessa zoomed in.

The words became clearer.

*Grandma’s Little Miracle.*

Not Mom.

Not Dad.

Grandma.

I looked away.

“She was already imagining a life where she was the parent.””

Vanessa whispered:

“I know.””

I looked at her.

“Why are you helping me now?””

Her eyes filled with tears.

“Because I almost let her do this.””

The confession surprised me.

“What?””

Vanessa looked at her hands.

“She convinced me you were the problem.””

I said nothing.

“She told me you were taking Daniel away from our family. She told me after the baby was born, you would stop caring about us.””

She shook her head.

“I believed her.””

Then she looked at me.

“Until tonight.””

I remembered the bathroom.

The locked door.

The recording.

The panic.

“She locked you in there too.””

Vanessa nodded.

“She wanted me to stay in the ballroom and smile.””

A sad smile crossed her face.

“My wedding was the perfect distraction.””

I looked at the documents again.

“What do we do?””

Vanessa took a breath.

“I have copies.””

“Where?””

“At my apartment.””

“Then we get them.””

She looked nervous.

“Your husband should come.””

I hesitated.

Then nodded.

When we returned upstairs, Daniel was standing outside my room.

He looked relieved.

“Are you okay?””

I looked at him.

“Your sister knows everything.””

His expression changed.

Vanessa stepped forward.

“Daniel…”

He looked at her.

And for the first time that night, the two siblings looked like strangers.

“What did Mom do?”” he asked.

Vanessa handed him her phone.

He watched the videos.

Read the documents.

And with every second, his face fell further.

When he finished, he whispered:

“She wanted custody?””

Vanessa nodded.

Daniel sat down.

“I don’t understand.””

I looked at him.

“What don’t you understand?””

“My mother loves babies.””

Vanessa gave a sad laugh.

“No.””

Daniel looked up.

“She loves being needed.””

That sentence broke something in him.

Because he knew it was true.

A nurse entered.

“Mrs. Carter?””

“Yes?””

“There’s someone here asking for you.””

My heart sank.

“Who?””

The nurse looked uncertain.

“Your mother-in-law.””

I shook my head.

“I don’t want to see her.””

The nurse hesitated.

“She said you’ll want to hear what she has to say.””

I looked at Daniel.

Then Vanessa.

Nobody spoke.

Finally, Vanessa whispered:

“Sarah…”

“What?””

“She wouldn’t come here unless she had another move.””

The nurse stepped back.

“There’s something else.””

My stomach tightened.

“What?””

May you like

The nurse lowered her voice.

“She brought a social worker with her.””
