Chapter 12: The Plan She Made for My Baby
The words followed me all the way back to the hospital.
Your birth plan.
Not mine.
Hers.
I sat in the passenger seat beside Daniel, staring out the window.
The city moved around us.
People walked to work.
Cars stopped at traffic lights.
The world continued normally.
But my world had changed completely.
“How did we not see this?””
Daniel’s voice was quiet.
I looked at him.
“Because your mother was careful.””
He swallowed.
“No.””
He shook his head.
“Because I was blind.””
I didn’t argue.
Because he was right.
When we arrived at the hospital, Vanessa was already there.
She looked exhausted.
“I found out what was in the file.””
I froze.
“What?””
She handed me a printed copy.
I read the first page.
Then the second.
Then I couldn’t read anymore.
Linda had written everything.
Where I should give birth.
Who should be in the room.
Who should receive updates.
Who should hold the baby first.
And at the bottom…
A section titled:
*Post-Birth Arrangements.*
My hands started shaking.
“What is this?””
Vanessa looked away.
“She planned for the baby to stay at her house for the first month.””
Daniel took the paper.
“No.””
His voice was immediate.
“No way.””
“She wrote that you would need rest.””
I laughed bitterly.
“Rest away from my own child.””
Daniel read further.
Then his face hardened.
“She listed herself as primary support.””
I looked at him.
“She wanted to replace me.””
He shook his head.
“No.””
But his voice broke.
“She wanted to replace both of us.””
The room went quiet.
Then my baby moved.
A strong kick.
A reminder.
I placed my hand over my stomach.
“No one takes my baby.””
Daniel reached for my hand.
This time, I let him.
Not because everything was fixed.
Not because one apology erased everything.
But because for the first time, he was standing beside me.
A knock came at the door.
We all turned.
A police officer entered.
“Mrs. Carter?””
“Yes?””
“We recovered the documents from your mother-in-law’s home.””
I nodded.
“Is she being charged?””
The officer hesitated.
“That depends.””
“On what?””
He looked at the folder in his hand.
“On whether she acted alone.””
My heart sank.
“Again?””
He nodded.
“We found messages between Linda and another person.””
Daniel stepped forward.
“Who?””
The officer looked down.
Then back at us.
“We’re still confirming.””
Vanessa whispered:
“But you know who it is.””
The officer didn’t answer.
That was answer enough.
My phone suddenly buzzed.
A new message.
Unknown number.
I opened it.
One sentence.
*You’re looking in the wrong direction. Linda didn’t create the plan. She was following orders.*
My breath caught.
Daniel saw my face.
“What is it?””
I turned the phone toward him.
Nobody spoke.
Then Vanessa whispered:
“Mom wasn’t the mastermind?””
The officer immediately reached for the phone.
“Do not respond.””
I stared at the message.
Someone else had been behind this.
Someone who knew everything.
Someone who had access to Linda.
Someone who wanted my baby.
Then another message appeared.
This time, it included a name.
And when I saw it…
May you like
I felt the room spin.
Because the person behind Linda’s plan was someone I had trusted from the beginning.
