Chapter 4: The Signature That Wasn’t Mine

The nurse’s words followed me all the way into the emergency room.

“Your mother-in-law is listed as the emergency decision-maker.””

I kept staring at the paper in her hands.

The signature at the bottom looked like mine.

The same curve on the S.

The same sharp line through the middle of the last name.

But it wasn’t my signature.

“I didn’t sign that,” I whispered.

The nurse looked concerned.

“Are you certain?””

I almost laughed.

Certain?

I was eight months pregnant, in labor, after being locked inside a bathroom by the woman whose name was on my medical paperwork.

“Yes,” I said firmly.

“I have never given Linda permission to make decisions for me or my baby.””

Daniel stepped closer.

“I need to see that.””

The nurse handed him the clipboard.

His face changed as he read it.

“Mom…”

He said the word quietly.

Not with anger.

With disbelief.

Like some part of him still wanted to find an explanation.

Linda stood near the hospital entrance, her expensive dress untouched, her wedding makeup still perfect. She looked completely out of place among the doctors, nurses, and families waiting for emergencies.

But she wasn’t embarrassed.

That was what scared me.

She looked annoyed.

Like we were inconveniencing her.

“Linda,” Daniel said, turning around.

She lifted her chin.

“What?””

“Why is your name on this?””

She crossed her arms.

“Because someone had to think ahead.””

I stared at her.

“Think ahead?””

My voice cracked.

“You forged my signature.””

Her expression barely moved.

“That is a serious accusation.””

Rachel, who had followed us to the hospital, stepped forward.

“Actually, it’s not just an accusation.””

She held up her phone.

“I have recordings.””

Linda’s eyes narrowed.

“You again.””

Rachel didn’t flinch.

“Yes. Me again.””

A doctor approached and interrupted.

“Mrs. Carter, we need to get you examined immediately.””

I nodded.

But before I was taken away, I looked at Linda.

“What did you plan to do?””

For the first time, she hesitated.

Only for a second.

But I saw it.

The smallest crack.

“I planned to make sure your baby was safe.””

I shook my head.

“No.””

I touched my stomach.

“You planned to make sure you had control.””

Daniel looked away.

And that hurt.

Because I knew he agreed.

The examination room was bright and cold.

The nurse attached monitors while the doctor checked my contractions.

My baby’s heartbeat filled the room.

Fast.

Strong.

Beautiful.

I closed my eyes.

That sound reminded me why I had to stay calm.

Not for Linda.

Not for Daniel.

For my baby.

A few minutes later, the doctor stepped back.

“Your contractions are progressing. We’re going to keep you here.””

I nodded.

Then I remembered the paperwork.

“Doctor?””

She looked at me.

“Can anyone listed as an emergency contact make decisions for my baby without my permission?””

Her expression immediately changed.

“No.””

“Even a family member?””

“No.””

“Then why is she listed?””

The doctor picked up the paperwork.

“I’ll need to investigate how this was entered.””

Daniel stood beside me.

“I want to help.””

I looked at him.

“Then tell me the truth.””

His face tightened.

“What?””

“How long has your mother been planning this?””

He swallowed.

“I don’t know.””

That answer hurt.

“You don’t know?””

“I knew she was upset about the wedding. I knew she wanted everything perfect.””

“That’s not what I asked.””

He looked down.

“I knew she thought the baby was going to change things.””

I felt a chill.

“What things?””

Daniel sat in the chair beside the bed.

“Vanessa has always been the center of the family.””

I waited.

“And Mom was scared that after we had the baby, everyone would focus on us.””

I stared at him.

“So she tried to hide me.””

He didn’t answer.

He didn’t need to.

The silence said enough.

Later that night, while Daniel stepped out to talk with the hospital staff, Rachel sat beside me.

“I’m sorry.””

I looked at her.

“For what?””

“For not realizing how dangerous she was sooner.””

I shook my head.

“You saved me.””

Rachel looked down at her phone.

“Sarah, there’s something else.””

My heart sank.

“What?””

She hesitated.

“The recording I sent wasn’t the only thing people heard.””

I frowned.

“What do you mean?””

“Someone else recorded Linda before I did.””

“Who?””

Rachel turned the phone around.

There was a new message.

A video attachment.

The sender’s name made my blood run cold.

Vanessa.

I stared at it.

“My sister-in-law recorded her?””

Rachel nodded.

“She said she needed to show you something.””

I opened the message.

The video loaded.

The screen showed the hotel hallway.

And Linda was standing there.

But she wasn’t talking about the wedding.

She wasn’t talking about me.

She was talking about my baby.

Then Vanessa’s message appeared underneath the video.

May you like

Three words.

“Watch until the end.””
