Chapter 6: The Nursery Behind Closed Doors
I read the message three times.
Then a fourth.
Because my brain refused to accept it.
Ask Daniel why your mother already has a nursery prepared in her house.
My fingers went cold.
Slowly, I lifted my eyes.
Daniel saw my expression.
“What?””
I didn’t answer.
I handed him my phone.
He read the message.
And his face changed.
Not confusion.
Recognition.
That was worse.
“You knew.””
His eyes immediately lifted.
“No.””
“You knew.””
“Sarah, I didn’t know about this.””
“But you know what it means.””
Daniel looked away.
That was enough.
I felt something crack inside me.
“What is in your mother’s house?””
He rubbed his forehead.
“I don’t know.””
“Don’t lie to me.””
“I’m not.””
His voice broke.
“I knew she had a room prepared.””
I stared at him.
“A room?””
He nodded slowly.
“She called it a grandparent nursery.””
I laughed.
But there was no humor in it.
“A grandparent nursery?””
Daniel looked ashamed.
“I thought it was normal.””
“A nursery for a baby who hasn’t even been born?””
He had no answer.
The silence was unbearable.
A knock came at the door.
Everyone froze.
The hospital attorney entered first.
Behind him was Linda.
She looked calm.
Prepared.
Like she was entering a business meeting.
Not visiting the woman she had trapped hours earlier.
“Sarah,” Linda said.
I looked at her.
“What do you want?””
She ignored the question.
“I think we should talk privately.””
“No.””
Daniel stepped forward.
“She said no.””
Linda looked surprised.
Not angry.
Surprised.
Like she wasn’t used to Daniel disagreeing.
“Daniel, don’t make this emotional.””
He stared at her.
“You forged her signature.””
Linda’s expression hardened.
“I was trying to help.””
“No.””
His voice was quiet.
“You were trying to control.””
For a second, nobody spoke.
Then Linda smiled.
A small, cold smile.
“You think you understand what’s happening.””
She looked at me.
“You don’t.””
I felt a chill.
“What does that mean?””
Linda walked closer.
“You’re about to become a mother. You’ll understand how difficult it is to protect a family.””
I shook my head.
“Protect?””
I looked at Daniel.
“Your mother thinks taking my baby away from me is protection.””
Linda’s jaw tightened.
“I never said that.””
“You didn’t have to.””
The attorney cleared his throat.
“Mrs. Carter, perhaps we should discuss this another time.””
Linda ignored him.
She looked directly at Daniel.
“Ask yourself one question.””
Daniel didn’t respond.
“Who has always been there for you?””
His face changed.
Because that was how Linda worked.
She didn’t threaten.
She reminded.
She used history like a weapon.
But Daniel surprised me.
“Mom.””
He took a breath.
“You were there.””
Linda smiled.
“Exactly.””
“But that doesn’t mean you own me.””
The room went silent.
Even Linda looked shocked.
I had never seen Daniel challenge her before.
Not once.
Linda picked up her purse.
“This isn’t over.””
She turned toward the door.
Then stopped.
“Oh, and Sarah?””
I looked at her.
“You should ask your husband why he signed the hospital visitor authorization form three months ago.””
My heart stopped.
Daniel looked confused.
“What?””
Linda smiled.
“Ask him.””
Then she walked away.
The door closed.
I turned slowly toward my husband.
“What form?””
Daniel looked terrified.
“I don’t know what she’s talking about.””
But before I could answer, the doctor rushed into the room.
“Mrs. Carter?””
I looked at her.
“What happened?””
She held a file.
“We found something concerning.””
My stomach dropped.
“What?””
The doctor looked between me and Daniel.
“The authorization form your husband signed gave another person temporary access to make decisions if you were considered unable.””
I stared at Daniel.
“No.””
The doctor continued.
“And that person was not Linda.””
A cold silence filled the room.
“Then who?””
May you like
The doctor looked down at the file.
“The name listed is Vanessa Carter.””
