Chapter 7: The Person I Never Suspected
For several seconds, nobody moved.
The doctor stood at the end of my hospital bed holding the file.
Daniel stared at her.
I stared at Daniel.
And Vanessa’s name hung in the air like a sentence waiting to be finished.
“Vanessa?”” I whispered.
The doctor nodded.
“Yes. The authorization form lists Vanessa Carter as the person who can make temporary medical decisions if you are unable.””
My chest tightened.
“That’s impossible.””
The doctor looked at me carefully.
“Mrs. Carter, the signature is from your husband.””
I turned toward Daniel.
“Did you sign something giving your sister power over my baby?””
His face went pale.
“No.””
The answer came too quickly.
Too desperately.
“I mean… I signed paperwork months ago, but I never agreed to that.””
I felt my heartbeat pounding.
“Then what did you agree to?””
Daniel opened his mouth.
Nothing came out.
That silence hurt.
Because silence was where all the hidden things lived.
The doctor looked uncomfortable.
“I’ll give you some time.””
After she left, I pushed the blanket away.
“I need the truth.””
Daniel sat down slowly.
“Sarah…”
“No.””
My voice was sharper than I expected.
“No more protecting me from the truth. That’s what everyone keeps saying they’re doing, and somehow I’m always the last person who knows what’s happening.””
He looked down.
“You’re right.””
“Three months ago. What did you sign?””
Daniel rubbed his hands together.
“It was after your appointment.””
I frowned.
“What appointment?””
“The one where you had that blood pressure scare.””
I remembered.
I had been seven months pregnant.
A routine checkup had turned into hours of monitoring because my blood pressure was higher than normal.
It had terrified both of us.
Daniel continued.
“Mom called me afterward.””
I felt my stomach sink.
“Of course she did.””
“She said we needed a backup plan.””
“For what?””
“In case something happened during delivery.””
I stared at him.
“That’s normal.””
“I know.””
“Then why is Vanessa involved?””
His eyes closed.
“Because Mom said Vanessa was the most responsible person she knew.””
I laughed quietly.
The sound was bitter.
“Your mother said that?””
Daniel nodded.
“I thought it was just a hospital emergency contact.””
“But it wasn’t.””
“No.””
He swallowed.
“I didn’t read every detail.””
I looked away.
“You signed something you didn’t read.””
“I know.””
“You gave someone else power over me.””
“I know.””
The room became quiet.
Then my phone buzzed.
Another message.
This time from Vanessa.
I almost ignored it.
But after everything, I needed answers.
I opened it.
There was one sentence.
*I need to tell you why I signed nothing.*
My eyebrows pulled together.
I looked at Daniel.
“What does that mean?””
He looked confused.
“I don’t know.””
A second message arrived.
*Meet me downstairs. Alone. Please.*
I stared at the screen.
Daniel noticed.
“It’s Vanessa?””
I nodded.
“Don’t go alone.””
I looked at him.
“You said that before.””
His face fell.
Because we both remembered.
The last time I trusted someone connected to his family, I ended up locked in a bathroom.
“I’ll come with you,” he said.
“No.””
The word surprised him.
“I need to know what she says without anyone influencing her.””
Including you.
I didn’t say it.
But he understood.
Ten minutes later, I was sitting in the hospital lobby across from Vanessa.
For the first time that night, she wasn’t a bride.
She wasn’t the center of attention.
She looked exhausted.
Her wedding makeup had faded.
Her hair was messy.
She looked like someone whose entire world had collapsed.
“I’m sorry,” she said.
I didn’t answer.
She looked down.
“I know that doesn’t fix anything.””
“No.””
She nodded.
“I know.””
The honesty caught me off guard.
Vanessa took a deep breath.
“My mother has always been controlling.””
I stayed silent.
“She made every decision for me. My dress. My college.
My career. My wedding.””
She laughed sadly.
“I thought she loved me more because she cared so much.””
She looked at me.
“Then I saw what she did to you.””
I folded my arms.
“Why did you record her?””
Vanessa reached into her purse.
“Because I finally realized something.””
“What?””
“My mother doesn’t protect people.””
She looked at the floor.
“She collects them.””
That sentence stayed with me.
Vanessa continued.
“The nursery in her house?””
I looked up.
“You know about that?””
She nodded.
“She started building it six weeks ago.””
My hands tightened.
“Why?””
Vanessa hesitated.
Then she said:
“Because she was planning for your baby to spend more time there than you expected.””
My blood ran cold.
“What does that mean?””
Vanessa looked at me.
“I found documents in her office.””
“What documents?””
She pulled out her phone.
“I didn’t understand them at first.””
She opened a folder.
Then showed me a photo.
A legal document.
A document with my name on it.
My breathing stopped.
Because at the bottom of the page was another signature.
Mine.
But I had never seen it before.
Vanessa whispered:
May you like
“She wasn’t just trying to control the hospital.””
“She was preparing to take custody.””
