Chapter 9: The Man From My Mother’s Past

The person standing beside Margaret was a man I had never seen before.

He was older.

Probably in his sixties.

He stood quietly beside her car.

Watching our house.

Watching me.

My skin felt cold.

“Who is that?”” I whispered.

Daniel didn’t answer.

Evelyn’s face had gone pale.

“No.””

I turned toward her.

“You know him?””

She didn’t respond.

“Evelyn.””

Her eyes stayed fixed on the window.

“That’s Jonathan.””

The name hit me instantly.

The name on my mother’s letter.

Jonathan Vale.

The man who was supposed to raise me.

Daniel looked confused.

“The man from the envelope?””

Evelyn nodded.

“Yes.””

My heart started racing.

“Why is he with Margaret?””

Nobody answered.

Because the answer was obvious.

They were connected.

Daniel moved toward the door.

“No.””

I grabbed his arm.

“Don’t.””

He looked at me.

“She brought someone into our home.””

“She wants us to react.””

I looked outside.

Margaret stood beside Jonathan.

She wasn’t angry.

She wasn’t emotional.

She looked confident.

Like she already knew how this would end.

Evelyn whispered:

“Sarah, you need to understand something.””

I looked at her.

“What?””

“Jonathan was the reason your mother ran.””

I froze.

“What?””

Daniel turned.

“Explain.””

Evelyn sat down slowly.

“Years ago, Emily discovered Margaret and Jonathan were involved in something dangerous.””

“What kind of something?””

“I don’t know everything.””

She looked frustrated.

“But I know Emily found proof.””

My eyes moved to the old letter.

“The document.””

Evelyn nodded.

“Exactly.””

Daniel looked outside again.

“Why would Margaret bring him here?””

Evelyn answered quietly.

“To scare you.””

I stared at her.

“Why?””

“Because she knows you have something she wants.””

I touched my stomach.

My baby.

The thought made me sick.

“She thinks my daughter is the key.””

Evelyn nodded.

“She believes your child can give her what she lost.””

A knock came at the door.

Everyone froze.

Then Margaret’s voice came through.

“Daniel.””

He didn’t move.

“Open the door.””

“No.””

A pause.

Then Jonathan spoke.

His voice was calm.

“Sarah.””

I felt my body tense.

“How does he know my name?””

Evelyn looked at me.

“Because he knew your mother.””

The knocking continued.

“Sarah, I know this is confusing.””

Jonathan’s voice remained gentle.

“But you deserve the truth.””

Daniel stepped closer to the door.

“You don’t get to come here after all these years and pretend you care.””

Jonathan was silent.

Then he said:

“You’re right.””

A pause.

“I don’t deserve your trust.””

I looked at Daniel.

Something about that answer felt strange.

Then Jonathan continued.

“But I can prove everything Margaret has told you is a lie.””

Margaret suddenly interrupted.

“Don’t listen to him.””

Everyone went silent.

Because for the first time…

Margaret sounded afraid.

Not angry.

Afraid.

I walked closer to the door.

“Why are you afraid of him?””

No answer.

I repeated louder:

“Why are you afraid of Jonathan?””

Seconds passed.

Then Margaret said:

“Because he knows what happened the night your mother died.””

My heart stopped.

The room became completely silent.

And Jonathan whispered from the other side of the door:

May you like

“Sarah…”

“I was there.””
