Chapter 6: The Name My Mother Buried

I didn’t open the letter immediately.

I couldn’t.

Because somehow, holding that envelope felt heavier than anything I had ever held.

It wasn’t paper.

It was twenty-eight years of secrets.

Daniel sat beside me.

“Sarah.””

I looked at him.

“What if everything we know is wrong?””

His expression softened.

“Then we find the truth together.””

I wanted those words to calm me.

They did.

But only slightly.

I carefully opened the envelope.

Inside was a letter written in my mother’s handwriting.

The handwriting I remembered from birthday cards.

From notes left on the refrigerator.

From the last letter she wrote before she died.

My eyes filled with tears.

*Sarah,*

*If you are reading this, then Margaret has found you again.*

I stopped.

Daniel noticed.

“What?””

I handed him the letter.

He read the first line.

His face became pale.

“She knew.””

I nodded slowly.

“She knew Margaret would come back.””

I continued reading.

*I wanted you to grow up without fear. I wanted you to believe the world was kinder than it really was.*

My hands trembled.

*But there are people who will hurt others to protect their own secrets. Margaret is one of them.*

Daniel clenched his jaw.

I kept reading.

*The man you knew as your father was not your biological father. He loved you as his own, and that love was real. Never doubt that.*

I covered my mouth.

The tears came instantly.

My father may not have shared my blood.

But he had been my father.

And that was what mattered.

The letter continued.

*Before I died, I discovered the truth about Margaret’s past. She had taken something from me. Something she believed belonged to her.*

I looked up.

“Something?””

Evelyn nodded sadly.

I continued.

*She believed my child could destroy her family’s future. She believed you were a threat.*

My heart raced.

A threat?

A baby?

Why?

The final paragraph made my entire body freeze.

*Sarah, if Margaret ever learns you are having a daughter, she will try to take what she thinks she lost.*

I looked at my stomach.

My baby.

My daughter.

Daniel grabbed my hand.

“She wanted your baby?””

Evelyn shook her head.

“No.””

She looked terrified.

“She wanted something connected to your baby.””

I stared at her.

“What does that mean?””

Evelyn didn’t answer.

Instead, she looked at the name written on the envelope.

The name I had ignored before.

“Sarah…”

Her voice became quiet.

“You need to know who that man is.””

I looked down.

The name was written clearly.

*Jonathan Vale.*

I frowned.

“I don’t know anyone named Jonathan Vale.””

Evelyn whispered:

“Yes, you do.””

My blood ran cold.

“What?””

She looked at Daniel.

Then back at me.

“Because Jonathan Vale is the reason Margaret entered your husband’s family in the first place.””

Daniel stood up.

“What are you saying?””

Evelyn took a deep breath.

“Margaret didn’t marry into your family by accident.””

The room became silent.

“She chose Daniel’s father because of Jonathan.””

I looked at Daniel.

His face had lost all color.

“Why?””

Evelyn looked toward the door.

Then whispered:

“Because Margaret wasn’t trying to protect her family.””

A pause.

“She was trying to hide that she destroyed someone else’s.””

Before anyone could respond, the front door suddenly opened.

We all turned.

Margaret stood there.

Her face was calm.

Too calm.

She looked directly at Evelyn.

Then at me.

“You always were terrible at keeping promises.””

Evelyn stood.

“Margaret.””

Margaret smiled faintly.

“I warned you.””

Daniel stepped forward.

“You’re not welcome here.””

Margaret ignored him.

Her eyes stayed on me.

Then slowly moved to my stomach.

May you like

And she said the one thing that made my entire body go cold.

“Sarah, you have no idea who your daughter really belongs to.””
